i was drivein home today satrted smelling a burning smell, looked at my volt meter and it was pegged on 0 so i pulled over smoke rolling out from under the passenger side of the hood, poped the hood the alternator is somokein and there is a wire with a fuseable link running to the starter relay that the insulation is melting off of and the wire is glowing red i pull out my letherman to cut the wire before it catches the truck on fire and it pushes though the wire and every thing quits. if you touch the 2 wires together it trys to turn the alternator like a motor. my guess is something inside the alternator took a crap it is the newer style with the plug in not the 3 wire hook up. do i only need to replace the alternator and that wire and its good to go? or is there a more in depth problem?
You should replace the alternator and the hot wire through the fusible link. You should have a 2G alternator with an internal voltage regulator, so everything is right there. The real danger in that setup is that the factory wiring harness has two black/orange 10 gauge wires that connect into one 10 gauge in the harness, then go to the fusible link. I recently converted mine to a 200 amp 3G unit, which required a new 4 gauge wire from the charging post to the battery. When I pulled the original harness apart I found the connection where the 2 10 gauge turned into one was so worn that only two strands of wire were holding the whole thing together. It was a fire waiting to happen. You might want to consider the 3G upgrade now....
