Well.........Mercury had the diesel topaz. It was the same as the Ford Tempo. As stated, Ford had the diesel Tempo. Engine was made by Mazda.
Ford also had the diesel Escort in the mid 80s. (I have one)

Chevy also experimented with the 5.7 diesel in the 80s. It was essentially based on a beefed up 350 Oldsmobile gas engine. A lot of Oldsmobile hot rodders would take the diesel block and convert it to gas. (Thick cylinder walls)

GM also experimented with the diesel Chevette in the early to mid 80s. I also have one of these. The engine was made by Isuzu. Used to be 50+ MPG was possible, but the diesel fuel isn't what it used to be. Mileage in the 40s is still possible, however. This car came with the automatic and manual, but the manual is really the only way to go with these. Engine parts are scarce. BTW, pity the poor soul who let the timing belt break apart. (Yes, timing BELT) The whole engine was toast.

I can't think of any more American badged diesel cars, although somebody here might pipe in........

your correct it was a topaz,I had a somewhat brain fart
a friend had it in the late '80s and I put a couple timing belts on it for him

the jeep liberty in 2005 and 2006 had a diesel the current one is in a larger jeep can't remember the model. Found it is the grand cherokee for 2008
I have seen lots of places where they leak diesel fuel in the engine area. Don't know how true it is but not good if true.

Ford sells the Fiesta in Europe that comes with either a 1.4L or 1.6L duratorq motor. The 1.4L can get up to 62 mpg on the highway. If ford got smart and brought it here I would be the first to buy one. Plus, it looks good for a little hatback and I can garuntee it would be fun to drive...Go to Diesel power mag on the internet and search ford fiesta that has the info.
