hi guys i am looking to trade in my old truck and buy a new to me ford. i have found a couple that i like but i have a few questions about the 6.0 engine. i have heard that the 03 and 04 are not good can any one shed some light on why they are a bad year and what did ford do to change them.
Well, I've got an early 03 with 200k km's on it, very minimal problems. I personally think that lots of the problems were due to misdiagnosis in the beginning and then just having parts thrown at them to be fixed. They did change some strategies but the big changes would have to have been made my navistar who is the engine manufacturer.
My truck, equipped as shown in my sig has 85K miles; had a turbo and all injectors replaced prior to my owning it, EGR and oil coolers after I bought it; Holds it's own against almost everything on the road (0-60 in 4ish seconds) 470 HP @ the crank (maybe 400 to the ground) and 510 ft/lbs of torque. It still gets 15MPG with mostly light-to-light driving. Let's just say that I could be more mature in my driving style.
03's an 04's had issues, but they are best known based on the truck itself, not just by the MY. Get OASIS reports on ANY Super Duty you are interested in purchasing BEFORE you lay down the $$. If the report shows that the known failure items have already been replaced/addressed, it's a good thing! Also, keep in mind that many of the "problems" reported about the 03-04 trucks were addressed programmatically via re-flashes and the like. The remainder of the problems are largely urban legend... Old stories kept alive by story-tellers of the bad-old-days.
Most every year 6.0 had it's own brand of issue, and just like the early builds, the issues have been addressed.
