Ceramic tile on concrete floor

Can ceramic tile go on a concrete floor or should there be a sub flooring on top of the concrete? I'm also going to be using a heated floor system (electric), not sure if that will make a difference to the answers I get.

Thanks!

if you're using a heated floor you definitely don't want wood in between. That would insulate it and drastically cut your efficiency.

There is no better sub-surface for tiles than a solid, poured concrete floor.

The tile won't interfere at all with the electric radiant heat.

I hope the concrete floor is old enough to know it isn't going to crack anymore or at least has the strips in it that control where it will crack.

my whole house is ceramic tile over concrete slab, let me tell you, that is one solid tile job........I've dropped hammers on the tile a couple times (accidentally) and not one crack or chip.

If I had it my way, my entire basement would be tile over concrete.

The only thing that you may have to deal with is unlevel concrete which could cause some tiles to lay uneven. You can get some self-leveler to deal with that problem if it exists.

I used to do flooring some years ago as a side job. I worked with an older fella and we installed alot of tile on uneven concrete. It was never fun for me, but the guy I was working for could do an amazing job on it!

You can not really tell tile is on an uneven floor unless you walk in bare feet if you do a 1/2 decent job. What you have to do is slightly squish the tile in with a slight twist. You can always use a 4-6 foot roofing level (basically a cheap aluminum ruler 48-60 inches long) and run it like a straight edge over the surface and press down harder on tiles sticking a bit farther up.

Depends on the size of the tile too. A 12"x12" or larger and it's easy to spot. The concrete slab at my house had a high spot about 2" high and about 4 ft. around because some cement was mixed up right on the slab and wasn't cleaned off before it dried. That had to be chisled off before the tile went down, but the mortar the tile sits on takes care of most uneven surfaces.

That isn't a high spot, it is Jimmy Hoffa

DON'T TELL ANYONE!

some kids my dad "hired" to do some work while the house was being built mixed up a couple of batches of cement right on top of the finished slab for the house and didn't clean it up. Guess they didn't have a mixer or where to lazy to mix it on top of a scrap of plywood.......whatever......I made them chisle it off, took them a couple hours....maybe that'll teach em......
