Proper method of pulling transmission?

OK...it's a little late too ask, but maybe y'all can help with the reinstallation part.

The truck is a 92-96 body style...methinks it's a 93, but I'm not certain. It's a diesel. It's got a manual "ZF" transmission.

I pulled the carrier bearing mounting bolts, while he undid the front ujoint, and we set the drive shaft to the side...he removed the electrical wiring and moved the clutch linkage out of the way...

Removing the cross member was simple. Removing four of the six bolts that hold the bell housing to the block was simple...the other two required a little creativity...but the real issue we had was...

How do you physically remove the transmission from under the flippin truck?

We got to a place with the transmission resting on a transmission jack, seperated from the block...input shaft free of the clutch...but the shift linkage on top of the transmission was still poking far enough into the cab that there just wasn't a way to get it out.

If we pulled the transmission far enough back for the bell housing to clear the clutch, the shift linkage on top of the transmission was jammed into the cutout in the floor of the cab, and we couldn't lower the transmission. If we pushed the transmission forward to free the linkage, the bell housing would get caught on the clutch.

Eventually, we pulled the seat out of the truck, removed the carpet and the access panel from the cab side.

There's gotta be a better way.

Reinstallation is either Thursday, or next Tuesday...please feel free to chime in with any bright ideas.

Thanks.

REMOVAL

Disconnect battery ground cable.
Remove floor mat and body floor pan cover, then the shift lever and boot assembly and weather pad.
Raise and support vehicle.
Support transmission with a suitable jack and disconnect speedometer cable.
Disconnect back-up lamp switch electrical connector from back of gear shift lever housing.
Disconnect driveshaft or coupling shaft and clutch linkage from transmission and wire to one side.
Remove transmission attaching bolts, then slide transmission rearward and lower from vehicle.
INSTALLATION

Reverse procedure to install.
Torque attaching bolts to 35-50 ft lbs .

Oops. Neither of us had pulled a transmission out of this type of truck before.

Now we know! Thanks.
