Can the floor mounted dimmer switches be purchased at local auto parts stores (Autozone, Murray's, etc) or do they need to be ordered specific to the vehicle?
Based on the condition of my switch, I'm betting that replacing the switch will solve my headlight problem.
If your headlights are turning off and on by themselves (Im guessing thats the issue), you'll prolly need to get a new headlight switch to solve the problem. Am I right????
I'm sure that you could buy a dimmer switch at a auto parts store; they aren't uncommon. think about Ford isn't the only vehicle that had the dimmer switch on the floor. plus you're not gonna be the only person to ever walk into the auto parts store looking for a dimmer switch.
Found one today for six bucks at Autozone...solved the headlight problem. Mine weren't blinking on and off, they just didn't work at all. The connection seems to be a little sensitive, but I'm going to be cleaning it all up a bit more before getting it ready to drive daily.
My dad worked as a Ford mechanic for most of my life since I can remember, and I NEVER saw one of those on a dimmer switch. I worked in the same Ford dealership from the mid 70's to later 70's, and I NEVER saw one on anything, new or used that came in.
If they ever used them, it must have been WAY back, like back when the pedals came up through the floor. The rubber boot would be a good idea, it would keep the moisture off of it, which causes the corrosion.
Did our trucks-73-79, come with a rubber cover on the switch?
My neighbor has a 75 Ranger 2wd, he's owned it since he got it for a graduation gift in the same year, he said his had one, they just come off very easier.....kept putting it back on, but one day it was just "GONE", he hasn't even attempted to replace it, stated it was late 1976 when it finally went missing for good.
But...this pad was an accessory, so it could have been purchased at the parts counter and installed on any vehicle with the foot operated dimmer switch.
I purchased the following Ford vehicles brand new, all used the same dimmer switch:
1965 F100 Standard Cab / 1968 F250 Ranger / 1971 F100 XLT / 1979 F150 Super Cab Lariat / 1988 F150 Super Cab Lariat / 1992 F150 Super Cab Lariat / 1979 Thunderbird Town Landau.
