The keys that I have for the ignition dont work in the locks on the doors and I was wondering if there is a key code that can be found from the vin number. Thanks again
I dont believe there is a key number, but I do know places can make you a key for your door, for not too bad. I had on another truck when I had no keys to it, they made a key for the door and ignition. Cant remember who, I think AAA did it actually
For what year? All the 78-79's I ever had used the same key in both. Someone has replaced the ignition switch in the OP's truck that is why his key won't work on the door.
just the other day i had a set made for my doors (79 f350) i just popped the lock out and took it to the locksmaith....about 10 mins later had a set of keys.
open door, look at the door jam, find the clip at the lock, use a screw driver to pry it out, then pop the look off the rod/ plastic keeper. then there are #'s on the lock its self.
Uh, the keys to my 79, 73, 70 and 69 have all had one key that is for the doors and ignition...
It really depends on year model and/or the truck had the security lock group, etc. Locking gas caps, locking hood release, locking glove box, etc...
Usually if the ignition key and door lock key is differen't, from the factory. the ignition key will be square headed, and the door lock key will be round headed.
A locksmith can make a key for you very easily, if needed.
Ford probably could not find the key code for your truck anymore. The code it uses has probably been used a dozen time or more since, and has been assigned to someone else. There are only so many variations that the key blanks for our trucks can make. And Ford has used the same key blank for well over thirty years. However the odds of someone having the same key code as you, in a 1000 mile radius, is very remote. With that given, I will tell you that my 1972 truck and my 1981 truck shared the same key code. Each others keys would start the other. Was that way from the factory. The odds of the same owner having two seperate trucks using the same key code, I would guess would be a million to one.

Years ago, I worked for a guy who had 2 Ford f250's. one was a 78 and the other a brand new 79, He accidently handed me the key for the 78 and not realizing it , I put it in the ignition and fired it up.2 different trucks, same key.

The key to my dad's 79 F250 started my 82 EXP. Once I used the EXP key to open the door of my EXP in a parking lot. Sat down, started it up, then thought someone had broke into my car, stole my Pioneer stereo, then took the time to replace it with a stock stereo. Then it dawned on me, "This isn't my car." I had climbed into the wrong white EXP. A few years ago my wife and I had an 93 Intrepid and a 91 Shadow. Those keys were interchangable as well.
Doesn't give you much faith in locking your doors.
Does anyone know where you could get factory original or repro Ford blanks for 73-79 trucks? I only have one original Ford key for my 79 and generic spares. I'd like to get some copies with the "Ford" stamped keys.
Also, the one original I have has the "Family of Fine Cars" stamp on the back. I'm thinking that is newer than 79--at least my old 78 didn't have that on the keys. Thoughts?
