Hello everyone! I am new to this site. I would like to find out what type of rear axle differential a 2000 F250 diesel 7.3L has? I need to find out the type of lubricant to use. In the Chilton book that I have it says three types of rear differentials! At least the way I am reading it!!! Thanks for your input.
Welcome to FTE. Do you have a 2wd or a 4wd? Odds are with a 250 you have the Ford 10.5 axle with 3.73 gears. There should be a tag on the diff that tells you for sure.
Rear fluid is a 75w140 gear oil. If you have limited slip (it probably doesn't work anymore if you do), it may want an additive. Royal purple must have the correct additive, I had my diff rebuilt when the gears went in and filled with RP 75w140, no noise at all.
Are you fixing something or just wanting to change the fluid? The axle should use any fluid so if the fluid level has dropped, you may want to look at the seals.
Just trying to change the oil! Have you tried the Amsoil synthetic oil products on your diesel? I have used the synthetic oil 15W-40 with great results. The mileage has improved and the responsiveness too. Plus I don't have to worry about changing the oil at 3,000-6,000. Now I can go close to 15,000-20,000. Saving some money on 15 quarts every oil change!!! I want to use their synthetic for differential too.
Appreciate the response!
Check the B-Pillar tag for all the info on your axles, springs, build date, paint color, original wheelbase..... etc. I agree with the Sterling 10.50 btu pull the code off that tag if you want to be positive. Match it up with the list in the Tech Folder and there you go.
