So, I am on my 3rd trip up north and my check engine light is on again? This is the 3rd time in a row that the light has come on during towing? This will be the 3rd EGR! I am getting really pissed! What are the techs missing? They throw an EGR at it and it's fixed until I tow my hauler again. Why is it screwing up only when I tow? It's a 2004 6.0 Excursion....... It's stock except for the muffler was removed and the cat is still in place, no programmer, ever....55k miles..... Anybody want this truck, someone take away my pain!!
I fell your pain. I bought my dream truck back in 04. It was a F250 KR CC SB SW. I bought it because I retired from the military and always wanted one. That was the biggest mistake of my life. I went through 5 egr's and 5 turbos and 27 trips to the shop for other things that went wrong with it. You know what they say about buying a boat. The two happiest days are the day you buy it and the day you sell it. I felt the same way about this truck. Now I have an 07 Lariat CC SB SW truck and absolutely love it. Maybe if you can find someone to take it off your hands and 07 X could be in your future. Good luck and hope it works out for you.
There have been posts here discussing the fact that Ford's supplier of EGR valves sent them a lot of bad ones. These bad EGR valves will fail early. Ford is updating the design, as well as working to get properly manufactured EGR valves. It is anticipated to resolve a lot of these issues. I would suggest that you discuss this w/ your Ford tech.
Maybe the Ford Techs. should figure out why your EGR fails only when you tow.
Throwing parts at it fixes nothing. You have to look at the cause of why it failed, and correct the cause.

I would guess that the failure shows up when towing - not that that is when it fails. The cause most likely is a poorly manufactured EGR valve. I agree with you regarding "throwing parts at it" - finding a good dealership service tech is 90% of the battle w/ these trucks.
Did the EGR fail electrically or did it just get clogged with a piece of carbon? I just got stuck on the Interstate towing a construction trailer, YESTERDAY, absolutely no power like the turbo had died. I had the whole mess towed to my shop costing me 420.00 and I got away cheep (ugh!). My code reader showed a egr malfunction and when I pulled the valve it had a big piece of carbon stuck in it holding it open. A cleanup and 20 minutes had me going good as new. There was a lota carbon chunks in there and I tried to get them all out but I suspect that this could happen again. I now carry the tools to remove the egr just in case. So now every 20K or 30K miles I guess I have to pull this F@@#$# thing and clean it out. I used to do this before the ULSD fuel but figured the new fuel would keep the soot down. Stupid me. I looked over the whole thing and I figure that this motor or any diesel with emisions controls is prone to this and that is the WAY IT IS. My truck has 115000 AND IT RUNS LIKE NEW NOW.

Ford is stating that the EGR valves are failing. This either means electrically or mechanically (but it does mean that it is not just plugging). I read on another site last night that yesterday a Ford mechanic just received a lot of EGR valves from Ford that are now the good ones. Hopefully we will see more posts like this and get this behind us!

did you have any running issues? what is the code that's been setting the MIL?
if it's P0401, it's probablly NOT your EGR valve..
The Excursion goes back to the dealer tomorrow..... It's probably gonna get an EGR but we will see!! It's all yours make an offer it's for sale now!
Been looking for a replacement vehicle because at this point I don't like that my Ford service dept. knows me and my name when they see me! I am wasting way too much time at the service dept. getting this thing fixed!!! I really have better things to do with my time than have my 54k miles Excursion falling apart under the hood! I change the oil and filters religiously and this is what I get??? What a bummer! I may not own another Ford for several years because of this Excursion......
as far as affecting your warrenty, the way ford is now just about anything will set them off, Im not sure how hard it is to find for a mechanic. all you have to do is pull your y pipe off and insert a freez plug with a couple tacks of weld so it stays in place. No more heat into your egr cooler so it lasts longer and no soot and carbon can get in to clog it up. I have done it on my truck before the warranty was up and had them run codes on it a couple of times and nothing was ever said from them. I also run a spartan tuner which shuts off the egr too. In my mind its double protection that I wont have problems with them again.
Will blocking off the EGR affect my warranty? Will it set off any codes??
No it will not set off any codes(atleast it didn't for me) and the only way that they will be able to know about it would be if they took of the up-pipe(y-pipe) to see it. Which they aren't really going to do unless you come in with a problem that would specifically affect the up-pipe or they would have to get it out of the way to fix a problem. So more then likely it won't affect your warranty unless one or both of those situations present itself to where they would have to go digging round your up-pipes for some reason or another.
Just got the Excursion back.......Turns out the problem was a "shorted EBP sensor." What is that???? Anyone, anyone? Is it an exhaust backpressure sensor?
