272 MACHINE WORK

I'VE BEEN TOLD THAT A 272 CAN BE BORED TO THE 312 BORE EASILY AS THESE BLOCKS WERE VERY THICK. OK ALL YOU EXTREMELY KNOWLEDGEABLE GUYS IT IS TIME TO SHOW OFF. IF THIS IS TRUE IT COULD SAVE ME SOME MONEY. PLEASE HELP!!!

To the best of my limited knowledge it's the same block. 272,292,312. The only thing that was not the same on my 292 and my 312 was the distributor. The oil pump, valley cover, valve covers, intake and exhaust manifolds cross.

The bore is different. Did you mean the castings were the same and only the machining different? Does anyone know how to change the e-mail address associated with my registration here . I changed my ISP and have a new address so I don't receive notice when a thread is answered.

I’m by no means an expert but have heard of quite a few people boring out their 272 to +.030 over the 312 bore with no problems. The 312 block is different, the main bearing saddles and caps are a larger diameter, not one of Ford’s better ideas. A stronger alternative is to turn down the main journals on the 312 crank to fit the 272-292 block.

MY MACHINIST ISN'T TO CRAZY ABOUT THE LARGE OVERBORE OR TURNING THE CRANK DOWN. I'M GOING TO CHECK WITH JOHN MUMMERT. HE SEEMS TO BE THE EXPERT. HAS ANYBODY HAD ANY HEAD WORK DONE BY HIM?
