Stupid Speedo Question...

Stupid Speedo Question...
Alright, kind of stupid question, but for a good while now, it's just been boggling my mind. On my '95 F-350 PS on the speedo, the line for 55mph is red while all the other lines are white. Why? Even on my '87 F250 6.9 the speedo has, I can't really remeber, but one dot, 2 dots, 3 dots, and I think 3 dashes at different speed numbers. Are these supposed to be shift spots, Thats all I can think of. Both truck are manuals, the '87 a 4spd, and the 95 a 5spd. If anyone can put my mind at ease, Thank you.

back when these trucks were made the avg highway speed limit was 55 mph, therfore most manufactures geared their vehicles to get optimum fuel economy at that speed. the red line is like an idiot light on the dash, not good for much but there as a reminder
