I have heard a nasty rumer that there may be a upcoming change to the Calif smog that will require Diesel truck to be smog tested and may even require some updated system. Does anyone have more info or a link to where I can find out more? I will soon be taking the truck into the dealer for the Cruise Control switch change and will ask them if they know also.
Vehicle Registration for 2008 = "Adds diesel-powered vehicles manufactured after the 1997 model-year that have a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 8,501 pounds to be in the biennial smog check program."
Makes me glad I'm moving this summer. You know that eventually they'll catch up with us. The sad thing is that I'm moving to Nevada and they like to mimic CA's green laws so they'll catch up to me eventually. Oh well, that won't stop me from ridding my truck of the EGR system.
As everyone already said, it's only for trucks under 8,500 GVWR. It begins in 2010, and I don't think it is coincidence that we are going to see the diesel 1/2 ton trucks right at the same time. I think they wanted to get that new crop before it even sprouted.
I also expect that it's just a matter of time before the bastages get to our 3/4 ton trucks too. This is something I consider whenever I'm thinking about cat delete, EGR delete, EGR unplugged, etc. Thus, all that stuff is still present and accounted for on mine.

catch up? here in Clark County(Las Vegas Area), NV we have annual smog checks on our diesels..it's not an OBDII test, but a dyno test...it's pretty weak though..they only get you up to about 40mph on the dyno...there is a visual (is there a cat in the house?)...
i have a friend who had a mild tune with EGR delete(programmed closed) and he passed, no problem..
william_04_x: Good point. I lived in Clark County until last year, but luckily my truck was registered up in Churchill county and that's where I'll be moving back to this summer.
Interesting point about passing emissions with an EGR delete! I've read in other places where others have done the same thing and even had cleaner readings with the EGR deleted. That just makes me laugh altogether and that's why mine will be coming out after I move as long as I'm going to hold onto my truck.
The reality is that it won't be long till we are all being tested for emissions with this huge GREEN movement this country is pushing.
