I got a Recon triple disk converter and had it rebuilt. Did NOT do it myself, but a very sound tranny (in my opin.) never ridden in a fully built tranny but this did the trick for me. all in all, with labor, i was OTD at $2100 so i'm sure it'd be much cheaper if you did it on your own. Just my $.02
Sun Coast offers some pretty good rebuild kits that have all the parts necessary to build a stout transmission. If I were to do mine again, I would look to upgrade the coast clutch drum and pack. I did do an Alto Red Eagle increased clutch count on all the forward clutch packs. After rebuilding mine, I found some pretty good info on other upgrades, I would do, next time around. Hopefully this will be a long tome from now. (Knock on wood) You can make it as bullet proof as your pocket book will let you. I spent about $2600 total (including billet triple disc TC & synthetic fluid). That would have been a few hundred less if I hadn't had to upgrade from the "mechanical diode". I like the satisfaction of doing the job myself. I feel more confident in my abilities since this undertaking.
Do you have a link? I've never been in an Auto, but this might be the perfect time to try.
Mark, looks like a symptom to me. Not allowed to give an idea what the issue could be? Gee had the same issue 2 years ago. Could care less if you are some engineer or not.

Also, there are no OD bands in any transmission used with a Ford diesel. So it's highly unlikely that the problem, whatever it is, could be the OD bands.
Explain that to the Ford Trans Tech who rebuilt my 2nd Trans at the local dealer.
Thanks! That's good info.
I am very mechanically inclined, how difficult are these trannys? How about special tools?
There are special tools, but I fabbed all the ones needed. Other than that, I only used feeler gauges and a dial caliper to check my clearances. I purchased a ATSG ( Automatic Transmission Service Group) tech manual. This manual is very informative and has good illustrations. If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me.

There is no band for OD. There is an Intermediate Band that only applies when put in Manual 2nd on the gear shift. Your Ford tech must have been mistaken in his statement to you. The clutch packs apply, at each shift, from 1st to OD, until all four are applied together when in OD.

Thanks for the correction. He does work on a lot of Trans.
I'd take Mark's word on ANYTHING relevant to a late-model Ford transmission over any local "I worked on a lot of 'em" tranny guys, no matter how experienced they seem to be. Yes, that would also apply to the "factory-trained" guy at the Ford agency.
He's got the kind of "experience" I trust, and he's just the kind of person that makes this forum the fine one that it is. He not only knows "how", but he also knows "why"!
Unlike some, he only seems to comment on what he specifically KNOWS, not what he "thinks", or what he "heard in the back room" somewhere, or "what happened to his buddy".
The comment about his professional background was uncalled for.
AND ITS UNCALLED FOR CALLING ME OUT WITHOUT ANY CORRECTION FROM SOMEONE WHO ENGINEERS THEM. That's right, actuallity and theory are two different worlds. I had the same issue. Step on the go and no go-Symptom. Who cares now anyway.
