so Custom could mean all options or none, huh? it means exactally what it says "Custom."
Yep, that's correct.
However a fully optioned Custom is rare.
I mean why buy all the options seperately for more money when you could get most of the same options in a package on the Ranger XLT, and for less money?
that's the thing my truck is a 79 not 76. and my truck doesn't have a badge on the glovebox either.
Yeah, they have been removed.
You can still tell what the trim was on your truck by contacting Ford and getting a build sheet. Look for ask Kate at the official Ford website or do a search here for build sheets.
Numberdummy may also be able to decode the trim code on your safety certification lable located on the cab. Or the tag on the door.
Thanks for all the feedback! Lots of good info here.
Working on getting some photos of my truck up. Will post when its done...
something about size issues, meh, soon to be fixed. (And no, that is NOT what she said... besides, who is this "she and why does she say so much?) Any how, hopefully when the pic is up someone can give a better idea as to what it might have been.
I thought the race track (like on FireCougars truck) was only done until 77 maybe 78? but I have seen 79's with it? would that be people adding it to it? I thought 79/78 did not have the race track trim (yes some people call it race track trim)
Correct. Explorers usually came with just chrome wheel arches, and pin striping. Deluxe front bumper with guards and rub strips. Bed rails, sport wheel covers etc. The Ranger package would add more to the custom etc.
Hey 81 you seem to be the "guru" lol I thought the race track (like on FireCougars truck) was only done until 77 maybe 78? but I have seen 79's with it? would that be people adding it to it? I thought 79/78 did not have the race track trim (yes some people call it race track trim)
What's on firecougar's truck is not what they call the race track trim. That trim is, the larger trim with rubber strip we've been talking about earlier. It's standard on Ranger XLT and Ranger Lariats, and optional on Custom and Ranger. This upper molding was used 1973 to 1979. The racetrack trim is the lower molding, that follows the wheel arches and the lower bodyline. This "Racetrack" trim was used 1977 to 1979, along with the upper molding that was used 1973-1979.

When the truck is equipped with Race Track (RT) mouldings, the upper bedside moulding was only used with RT trim. It is not the same moulding as the non RT vinyl inserted moulding.
While this pic doesn't show it, the end of the RT moulding is different (the end is curved) to accept the vertical piece (D7TZ-9929396-AA R/S & D7TZ-9929397-AA L/S).
Uh...Whoever put part numbers in these RT moulding illustrations must have been on something. The part numbers are ALL mixed up.
D7TZ-9929038-BA shown above is an in-correct part number for the upper moulding, it's actually the part number for the lower moulding, and it's for a short bed only.
D7TZ-9929038-AA R/S & D7TZ-9929039-AA L/S mouldings shown for the lower mouldings are actually the part numbers for the UPPER mouldings for a long bed!
I wouldn't be a bit surprised if these illustrations were from the lmc catalog.
btw: Race Track is the official Ford name for these mouldings.

Right, the upper molding are vitually identical in looks, except for the differences you mention though. Hence the confusion some people have between them.

Thanks for the heads up with the part numbers. I hate innacuracies like that. Not sure who made these paticular diagrams.
