'56 Drum vs. Disc

I want to do some maitanence on the brake system on my F100. It will not be a daily driver but I will be rebuilding the V8 which will have some hp in it in the near future so I need to be able to stop. Currently the MC has a small leak and the lines look to be original. Also, when I need to stop I definitly need to apply a good amount of pressure to come to a stop. I would like to get some thoughts before I go down the route of disc/drum. If I keep the drum set-up, would a MC rebuild help with the amount of pressure needed to stop? Is there a different MC option for a drum/drum set-up that helps with the amount of foot pressure. I am not bias to either set-up. If figure if I can upgrade the drum/drum set-up and save a few pennies that will work for me. Otherwise I was looking at the disc conversion set-up from Speedway.

Thanks as always for the insight and 2 cents.

- Paul

You can always try a larger bore MC, no idea from what or where possibly an early 70's F100/F250....or even add a power booster from the same year and that will increase braking pressure....... but there is no comparison to a good power disc setup though......

Most likely that orginal MC is a single stage unit. The newer 2 Stage is really the best way to go for safety. I installed a Disc Brake setup and a 76 Buick Estate Wagon (non-power) MC on the front of my 51F1 and love it. I would suggest installing a dual MC and Disc Brakes on the front at least. I pieced my system together with all new components, and really didn't save any money when all was said and done.

I agree with the comments to upgrade the MC and whether you go with discs or stay with the drums, I would also replace the lines. These brake lines have probably seen a lot of old fluid run through them over the past 50+ years, it would be a good investment to replace them now along with the MC.

Thanks everyone. I guess it is kind of hard to argue with putting in NEW modern parts.
