Y-blocks run best when the valve lash is set .017 (hot and running). Use a stepped feeler gauge and a u-joint with an extension on a ratchet wrench to do the adjusting (if self locking type - otherwise, screwdriver and box wrench). This is practically a lost art. If the valves are not adjusted evenly a rough idle will result; if all are too loose a loss of power will result (late valve timing, lost lift and duration); if all are too tight a poor idle may result, valves may burn, and valves will not seal (if lash is less than zero). Also, note how well oil is making it to the rockers while the valve covers are off (the y-block curse).

Good Luck

Would this be true for a 292 also?

True for 272, 292, and 312. Had a 292 in a 59 Galaxie in 1967. With youthful ambition use to set the valves every second month and enjoyed doing it. Later pulled the 292 and dropped in a 312 from a 57 Merc. Ran great until 1973 when I gave it to my brother-in-law. He never could figure out the relationship between the oil pressure light and engine longevity. Need to stop now --getting sentimental.

What is the method of adjusting the valves when cold (non-running)?

Turn the crank until the #1 exhaust valve and #7 intake valve start to open. Continue to bump the crank until these two valves are approximately wide open. At this point adjust the following to .019 :

#1I
#3E
#4I
#5I
#6E
#7E
#8 I&E

Now turn the crank one full revolution until #6E and #4I are full open. Now adjust the following:

#1E
#2 I&E
#3I
#4E
#5E
#6I
#7I

After all valves are adjusted cold run the engine up to temperature. With the engine at minimum idle, adjust all the valves to .016 using the procedure described in other posts.

Good Luck
