Well it's time to do a tune up on the the old truck. I've gone back and read alot of posts on it and I think I'm ready to dive in. With 160,000 miles on it (130,000 when I bought it) and the development of missfires underload is what drew me to this conclusion. I plan on doing plugs and COP's. I don't know how good of shape they're in so I'm going to replace all rather then try to hunt down the bad ones or bad boots. When reading through the posts there was a couple of them that talked about rebooting the computer. How is this done? They also said they disconnected the battery for a day and turned the headlight switch on. Is this part of the reboot or something else? I'm planning on taking pics of the process and follow the steps laid out in the other posts. I hope to be able to post them for others to use as a guide. Thanks for all the info.
Doing all the spark plugs and boots is a good start.
Also, I would get a new fuel filter
new air filter
new pcv valve
I would also clean the
MAF
IAC
I would run a little seafoam through the vac line, and some chevron techron in the gas tank.
do a oil change and call it a day.
unless you want to change ALL the fluids(trans, coolant, ect)
and yes it is a good idea that after you do all these things, leave your battery unpluged for overnite.
By doing that you let the in car computer loose power and forget all its saved info.
you do this because the computer will see you have a miss fire, MAF problem, IAC problem, ECT. . . and it will try to compensate by remapping the air to fuel, ect. . .
letting the computer relearn on a newly tuned motor will show more power and MPG
Thanks for the info. I just got done doing the fuel and air filter about a week ago. I also ran seafoam trough the brake vac line thinking that a fuel problem was causing the lack of power and missing. What do you use to clean the MAF and IAC? Now that you mention it I do need to change all fluids and oils. It seems my day is going to get a little longer. Thanks
