460 fuel pump
From what I understand the reason for Ford changing to the electric pump was to eliminate problems with vapor lock on 460's. Electric pump pushes fuel from the tank, mechanical pump "sucks" fuel from the tank. To convert back to a mechanical pump you'd have to remove the electric pump and replace it with a pickup tube of some sort and replumb the fuel lines. Many times, the reason electric pumps fail is due to a clogged fuel filter which causes too much current to be drawn by the pumps. Be sure to check/replace the filter in the carburetor inlet as well as the one in the tank.
Thanks for reply
I will check pump and filters today. Truck has dump body easy to get to tank. Think I will replace relay also. I have a 1975 F350 400ci engine mach. pump never gave me the headaches the 460 has.
Thanks again
Thanks again
pump & relay
Replaced pump and relay - ran fine not cutting out
However relay still getting hot.
Might try the mech. pump looks easy. replace in tank pump with hose and some kind of filter for pickup - plumming for mach. pump seem easy. reading wire diagram for electrical pump system is nuts / oil switch two hots from switch and selonoid.
should be easy to vent to prevent vapor lock.
wonder if cam has lobe for mech pump?
thanks Paul

Be careful. If your mechanical pump develops a hole in the diaphragm, the electric fuel pump can fill the engine crankcase with fuel.
Good point, and that same caution was pointed out in the Holley install notes that came with the pump.
1983 E350 rockwood motor home with 460cu.in. hot fuel option would not pull itself up a small hill without missing real bad and at times shutting down. installed new 5-8 lb fuel pump it ran great untill one day while driving down the road it just shut down on level ground would not restart untill it cooled down. when it did it only ran about 1 mile and same thing! after reading in this forum about others problems i think it might be a relay getting hot and shutting fuel off trouble is i cant locate relay need help
The diagrams have been posted on the forums, unfortunately I can't recall exactly where right now. If you search for fuel pump or my username DBAPilotDad you should find them - on mine (single tank), the oil pressure switch is on the back driver's side of the engine (under the dog house), the fuel cutoff switch is on the passenger foot well and the fuel relay is under the hood behind the driver's side headlight on the fender wall.
How about this timing ... just a couple of threads down - there's some diagrams!!!

On my 84 460 I was trying to put most of the fuel system back to factory and had a lot of problems but thats another story, anyway I had a mechanical fuel pump installed and left the new electric pump in the tank and just left it unpowered and everything worked fine and is still driving around with no problems of a vapor lock and no problems starting even if it sits for a long time.
