It's considered the b@st@rd of the 335/Cleveland series. Big block bell housing bolt pattern, uses 2v Cleveland heads, the 400 crank but with longer rods (IIRC) to shorten the stroke.
The 351M actually doesn't use the 400 crank. A 400 crank is used in the 400 engine and has a 4" stroke. The 351M engine uses a 400 engine block with a 3-1/2" stroke crank.
It's kind of a big small block. As mentioned, Ford considers it part of the "335" series engines. However, if you take a 351M head and place it on a 351W block, it will fit and the head bolts can be installed. So that means that important design features like bore spacing, head bolt pattern etc. were copied from the "small block" series.
I say all 335 series motors are small blocks, the 351C uses same mounts and tranny as a 302 and the other two are just alterations of that original small block. Heck like beanscoot said you can bolt the head on a 351W or a 302 that makes it all small to me. Surely a Big block should have a bigger bore than a 289 right? Well except some FEs I think.

right....the 351M/400 bolts into the same frame perches as a 302/351W. Can't do that with a 429/460, or FE. Some of the first 400's had small block bolt patterns as well. The 351M came about 4 years after the 400 as a destroked 400. Crank and pistons are all that's different. Even the connecting rods are the same.
Silly Question: Is the 351M considered a Small or a Big Block?
Which part are you talking about? The rings also fit 289s,302s, all 351s and 400s.
The rocker arms and distubtor fit 351C, 400, 370, 429, and 460s
Valve covers, timing chain cover, timing gear parts, fuel pump, oil pans, and oil pump fits the 351C.

not to start anything here but you can bolt a 460 into 302 frame perches done it on over 10 trucks by useing fe motor mounts or now you can buy mounts from places like L&L.
As per the siggy. I'm from Halifax Nova Scotia Canada, havi, gas there just hit $1.339 per LITRE!!!! That works out to $5.208 per GALLON!!!! I'll pay the $4.00 per gallon and not complain TOO much!!!
