Hello, I am new and I am sorry if this isnt posted in the right section. I have a 2001 Excursion 7.3 diesel. This morning, it wouldn't start. Had little power ( lights barely on, no horn etc) but there was a clicking noise whenever the lights came on (when we opened the door) or when I tried to blow the horn. Also the power locks etc wouldnt work. When I turned the key, nothing happened. Just seemed dead. Then after about 20 or 30 minutes of trying to start it, it just started fine. This happened once before a couple weeks ago but it didn't take as long to start. Any ideas of what is going on would be very much appreciated!!

Reason: title changed :)
Relax! You're in the right place! Your problem doesn't sound serious, we're going to just have to narrow down some possible causes.
Have you gotten the CPS replaced recently...did you get a recall notice?
You say that the truck didn't even "try" to turn over...no chugging, nothing? You were turning the key and you didn't hear the starter turning over?
Pop open your hood and check your battery terminals and connections. You might have a battery cable that's barely making a connection..but in that case the motor would at least attempt to start.
I don't think its the batteries as it did eventually start fine. I did check them though, and the connections seemed tight. I got the notice but haven't taken it in yet, could that cause this? The starter didn't turn over, no lights on the dash, no ding ding ding noise (lol) just nothing. Then for whatever reason, started just like normal.
Welcome to FTE. Like Lisa said, You are in the right forum. I have a feeling you will be spending a lot of time here.
What were you doing in the 20 - 30 mins between no start and starting? Not only the battery connections but the ground to the truck should be checked. Something had to happen between the no start and start part.
I just kept trying to start it lol. Ya know doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results? Only this time it worked eventually. (I was frustrated and had to get my kids to school - the one day they didnt take the bus) I popped the hood, checked the batteries, I did not check the ground to the truck. I did try putting it in neutral and tried to start it that way but it still wouldnt start. But it did start a few tries after that so I dont know if that would have anything to do with it?

.
It could be a wiring harness, ground, and when attempting to start, something was "bumped", which I hope is not the case, because if that's the case, we're chasing an electrical gremlin.
Sounds dumb but id also check the power cable as it connects to the starter. I've seen these frey and barely hangin on by a thread.
Cheap possibility: I say change out the CPS. They do odd things when they go out.
Ok I will check the ground and the starter when I get off work. I also called and made an appointment for the CPS. Thank you !
If you are getting the CPS changed out by a dealer, don't let them charge you for it. THe CPS was such a problem in these trucks, they have been recalled, and the dealerships should be replacing them at no cost to you.
If they try to do other work to your truck, tell them no thanks and drive it away.
I agree with Layson go get the batteries checked a bad CPS will not have any effect on your engine not turning over , dim headlights, or no horn. If you have one bad replace both of them. If its not your batteries clean all your battery connections.
If everything was dim then suddenly kicked on like normal, it would have to be a bad connection somewhere. One of the cable batteries or the crossover cable has some extra corrosion or a loose terminal.
