a workable transmission

Hello all.
I have a 63 F100 truck. Put a 1957 292 y block from a F700 in the 63 truck. Is there a manual 4 speed or better transmission that could go on this engine as a bolt on and use a floor shifter. I am not concerned wether it is from a newer vehicle or vintage as long as it is reasonable and reliable.

Used the 3 speed manual transmission from the 223 6 that came in the 63 truck. It did not bolt up to the 57 bellhousing/ engine. Shaft length was correct so drilled the bellhousing and made it fit. This works. This trans is small and has no mounts. Put a floor shifter in. I really do not like this trans. 3 speed and always grinds when going in 1st or reverse. Big gap between 2nd and 3rd. I would like an automatic but this is a bigger more costly conversion.

Thanks for the help

a workable transmission

Hi Andy,My 57 has a T98 4spd transmission and it may not be much different than your 3 spd since it has a granney 1st gear but works well.I don't know if it will bolt up to your F700 bell housing you may wan't to get a bell housing with what ever transmission you get.I don't know what kind mounts you are talking about I thought they were on the bell housing.I have been told that a good transmission is a T89 4spd overdrive and it will bolt up to a 4spd bell housing.I have been looking for one a couple of years now.I do know were 2 t98s are with bell housings if thats what you wan't I can find the phone# hope this helps.

Thanks for the Help.
Do the T98 transmissions with the granny gear grind when going into 1st and reverse ? Is there a large gap between 2nd and 3rd gear ? Under acceleration do you have to rev the thing high in second just to keep from bogging down in 3rd ? The mounts on bellhousing act as rear motor mounts and I guess transmission mount as well. The trans currently on the truck just bolts to the bellhousing and hangs. Does not have a cross mount under the actual trans like most older cars. I thought that some transmissions in these trucks might have a cross mount. The truck currently is in the body shop getting body work and painted. By the time I get it back it will most likely be into the cold months. After that I would be interested in a T98 and bellhousing. The truck has a 3.89 rear. I found the correct 3.25 rear at one of the Carlisle shows this year and am going to change that most likely in the spring in between working on my 66 Mustang and helping a friend restore his 71 Nova. Trying to get this truck to ba able to be driven safely and reasonably comfortably on the highway. Has Arm and Leg strong power brakes and steering. It is a low budget project. Would love to change to a real front end with power steering but that would cost more than the truck did. I probably will change to disc brakes eventually. The 63 truck was the only year truck that came with single piston drum brake wheel cylinders and these are no longer available.
Thanks for the help

Yes the t98 will sometimes grind going into 1st and reverse but it is still a truck transmission. Most of the time it is fine, with a 3.89 rear you will never need first seconed will not grind with a 3.25 you might need it on a hill.I think it will be a good ratio for hiway use.I am running a 3.70 and thinking about switching to a 3.50.Now from 3rd to 4th you do haft to wind 3rd up a little to get to 4th.It doesn't seem to be a problem. My engine will pull 4th gear from almost a stop.I am also using the strong arm power steering and brakes. The steering doesn't bother me because it runnes so strait down the hiway .But the brakes I might try to go with disk someday but I want to keep the strait axle.I also had the single pistion cylinder front brakes they don't work going backwards.I put regler ones on it.they do work if you ajust them about every 1500 miles. You might want to reseach this trans more their might be a better choice.I am in search of a overdrive that I havent been able to find.
