49 ford f1 transmission

I am helping a guy with a 49 ford f1 panel van. The owner wants to go through the engine and transmission. I am going to try to pull out the motor and tranny together. My question is how to remove the shifter from the transmission. I see there is a cover with 6 bolts below the shifter. Do I take those out and shifter comes out with the cover? Thanks, Andy

That's how I did mine before I read that the top "dome" unscrews and the shifter will come out. Beware of the pin in the end of the shifter that can fall out.

Dont know what trans you have but with the T9 in mine the domed cap right where the shifter enters the trans unscrews. You might need a strap wrench to get it loosened. If you look under the flange of the cap you should see fine threads.

Thanks for the replies, I think you saved me a lot of extra work, I tried to turn the dome with a channel lock pliers but it's really slippery so will try something else tommorow, I'll post how it works

A strap wrench, as mentioned above, is a good bet.

If it is too difficult to remove the shifter, you can do like you mentioned and remove the cover with the shifter attached.

Shifter

I took the dome off with a channel lock pliers and was able to pull out the shifter easily. I have the motor and tranny about ready to come out, I am making a video and will post the url

stick shift

When you take the cover off, make sure the lever is in neutrel, it will make puting it back in a lot easier. When the cover comes off, you'll see what I mean. Also, on some of the towers, you have to push down on the cap as you are unthreading it. Been there, done that!
Good luck,
Jim

You forgot to warn people about the pin (part #7221) that Joe and 76-5.0 told you about in post #4 and #2. If it falls into the transmission you will have a very difficult job fishing it out.
