while driving I-95 the e4od stopped working. no noise, shudders or leaks The fluid level and condition are ok. There is no response in any gear or at any rpm. the truck is a 91 f-350 4x4 7.3 idi. The tranny was rebuilt just before I bought it 30000 miles ago. Anyone have any ideas ?????
Make sure you're transfer case didn't jump out of gear. Also to eliminate the posibility of something broken in the Tcase dput it in drive and have some one watch to see if the driveshaft between the trans and the Tcase spins.
If it is the trans case when you put it in drive you wont be able to go back to park it will make a grinding noise no drive shaft between them to look at.
Complete electrical failure will not cause a no drive condition in the E4OD. with no 12v power, you will still have reverse with the selector in "R", second gear with the selector in "2" or "1", and 4th with the selector in "(OD)".
Thanks guys. I disconnected the rear driveshaft from the diff. , placed it in 4wd and the front shaft spun with the rear shaft so I believe the transfer is ok.
id say take off the pan and see if there are any parts laying in it
NO, NO, NO!
There may or may not be trash in the pan, and that is a poor indicator of the issue as I have pulled some full of crap and they still ran, and some clean as a whistle and they would not move!
There are three (most common) places where the E4OD can fail without burning the fluid
There is the forward clutch teeth wearing out and failing causing no forward movement.
If the clutch surfaces looked good they might not have changed them missing the worn teeth.
Then there are the other two that will any kill movement in forward and reverse.
The input shaft to the OD planetary, and the output to it's planetary.
And hard shifting from a bad FIPL can cause any of the three to happen.
If the fluid is not burnt, my money is on one of those three.
