Going down the road, I hear a sudden growl and a slight vibration like the truck is trying to shift into 4 wheel drive on its own. I can pull over on the side of the road, put it in 4 wheel drive and then take it out, back up and then the truck is good for a while. I noticed when I hit bumps it is worse. Could somebody please tell me what this could be.
Is it a push button t-case or manual sift? If it's a push button, I almost bet you broke the shift fork ends off and its sliding in between 2 and 4. Had it happen to my 95 150 with the push button t-case.

This is the first 4 x 4 I have owned. Is the shift fork in the transfer case? Do you remember about how much it cost? Is it okay if i just drive it in 4 wheel drive high until it is fixed?
Im with Karl (kjett). The little motor actuators probably broke the fork.
Im reading between the lines and will guess you arent extremely mechanically inclined...which is ok...but with that being said any good mechanic could fix it for you in a few hours. I wouldnt jump under your truck with a dollar general tool set and start taking things apart without a great understanding of what youre doing.
