I have a couple of front axles where the eyes are worn (as a result of too much driving with loose kingpins?), so that a stock new kingpin is sloppy in them. I ordered an oversize kingpin set (0.010 larger diameter) from Rockauto, but I haven't found a shop that can install it. I've called a bunch of local automotive and general machine shops without success.
One alternative I was offered is to have the axle bored out and sleeved so a stock kingpin will fit properly, but that'll cost almost as much as a new dropped axle from CPP.
So, I'm thinking I'll have to buy a reamer from someplace like MSC Industrial Supply or DIG Supply. That'll be around $60 to $100 plus shipping, so I'd prefer to get the right size the first time.
My questions: Should I order a reamer the same size as the kingpin diameter? A little undersize? Will that reamer also work for the spindle bushings? And, what kind of reamer? Hand or Chucking or?
Thanks for the tip. I made some phone calls, and eventually got referred to a shop that builds race car stuff. They said they will do it with adjustable reamer; I should get the results next week. Then I can get on with cleaning and painting the axle, and fitting the disc brake kit.
I guess I don't understand why it would be easier to bush the axle, though. What's wrong with just getting an appropriate reamer and sliding in the 10 thou oversize kingpins?
