What next?

Due to the outrageous diesel prices ($4.50 per gallon just east of St Louis in Illinois) I've decided to take the plunge after owning this truck I ordered over 6 years.

My Banks TOP and Monster exhaust arrived via the brown truck this morning. I've talked with Jody twice this past week and will order the DP tuner soon. I'm looking at No Start, Stock, high idle, 60 Tow, 80 tow, and 100 HP. I'm planning on having BTS upgrade my tranny/TC; although they're working well with 82500 miles on them. I added 315/75R16 rubber 2.5 yrs ago and my mileage has suffered around town.

I'm wanting to do this right and only once. The only thing I've done to the motor is add the AIS. Jody said to add the fender sleeve so I'll do that.

Should I look at changing the intercooler to a Banks, Spearco or 6.0; do anything to the turbo i.e. ATS housing with stock wheel (Jody's recommendation), or change to a TN. I don't plan on going to big oil or changing my injectors mainly because I'm not looking to race, it's just my daily driver/hunting truck/31' travel trailer pulling to deer camp. I'm looking for driveability and power with economy (doesn't everybody)?

I'd appreciate any input from those who've had experience along these same lines. Thanks again as always!!!

BTW.....Americans better start to realize we're already under attack! Economics is a way to wage war and fuel is our enemies weapon of choice. The Democrats refuse to allow more refineries or drilling (they just proved this with their vote in Congress yesterday). An old warrior's opinion.

Being you want to do it right the first time, there are things you need to do before the DP-TUNER.

1. gauges pyro, trans, boost.

2. Intake, which you have.

3. Exhaust 4" or 5" your choice. Turbo back

4. BTS-VB to help keep the tranny cool and make it last longer.

5. DP-TUNER

The ATS housing will take the surge away with the tuner. There is not much difference in the ICs. You should be good with the stock IC. You don't need a new turbo unless you plan to do infectors.

And FWIW, we try to leave politics out of the forum because there is both parties on here.

Good luck.

Rick,

Thanks for the info, I have 7 gauges already and just got the exhaust. As for the politics, I've been on this site for over seven years. I've seen many very well thought out quotes as to member's beliefs. My initial thought was on diesel prices and it's a fact on record one party refuses to do the common sense thing about helping every American affected by high fuel prices. We're never going back to the horse-and-buggy days. Airplanes, plastic, food, you name it is affected by what's happening. V/r Les

I talked to Dennis about an ATS housing but he said to run the turbo as it is and IF surge appeared, get the ATS housing. Sometimes it comes, sometimes not.

The other option is a 6.0 Intercooler if you are hauling heavy stuff

What are "infactors"? I put a Van Turbo for lower EGTs and I can put injectors later on if I so choose.

Good post Rick,

I installed the DIIC intercooler 2 years ago and I noticed about a 100 degree egt drop unloaded around town, highway, etc - and up to 200 degrees while towing our 32' 5th wheel.

With my focus mainly on towing our 5th wheel I installed swamps 175/146 injectors. Yes they added 50 more hp, but they use alot less oil than the stock split shots so I no longer get the SES light from the dreaded 1211 code when the HPOP can't keep up with the demand from the programs and the stock injectors. Great tow upgrade in my experience and yielded a +1 mpg improvement on two 1500 mile round trips to SOuth Dakota & back.

The fender sleeve on the AIS will definitley help. Helped reduce the smoke when I had the AIS installed. I still have it, just testing the 6637 out on my setup. Plus the 6637 filters are 1/2 the price of the AIS replacement filters and seem to be doing the job just as well on my used oil analysis reports.

My 2 cents worth....

Hey Chief.....haven't seen you post in a while. Welcome back.

It absolutely will surge, especially with the TT hooked, so do the ATS housing...but I wouldn't worry about the intercooler. Looks like you've already got the rest of it covered.

I had similar fuel economy issues with 315's. Dropped back down to 305/70's and recoverd it.

Cookie88,

Thanks for noticing! I've been around but I finally had the 51 year hip fix done on 25 March. Hurt the right hip in the service and after 4 years of drugs and doing absolutely nothing, I couldn't stand it any longer. Dr Barrack at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St Louis gave me a brand new titanium "ball joint". Something new call hip resurfacing; you get to keep more of the leg bone. Man I feel just like I did in Afghanistan.....great! I'm walking miles per day, working out on an elliptical trainer and riding my bicyle again. DON"T REPLACE A HIP.....RESURFACE IT! Only for those under 62.

Thanks for the input on the truck. I'll probably still change out the IC and trans cooler while I'm at this. V/r Les

There are no downsides to doing that....aside from the hit to the wallet and maybe a little turbo lag. You will definitely be good to go when towing.

Glad to hear you're up and around again.
