Looking at an Escape.

So I will be in the market for a new vehicle soon and I have been looking at Escapes. What does everyone here think of them? How true are the milage estimates? How does the 4 banger stand up against the V6? etc...

Get the 2.3L unless your pulling any trailers. The 2.3L/auto should get 27+ mpg and have plenty of power. Never thought I'd say this but the 3.0L in our 04 is almost to powerful for everyday use. Gets 22-23 on the highway though. Common problems are IAC's, alternators and are very picky about the quality of transmission fluid.. typical ford stuff.

I never liked them and thought they were too small. I guess if you want a small cheap unibody make believe SUV that is short on Utility they are okay, same as the Honda. I think I would either go with a car (mileage) or a mini-van (people) instead.

My 01 V6 4X4 has almost 102,000 miles on it and it has been very dependable. I turned it over to the wife at 73,000 miles and she would kill me if I tried to get her something else. It has always gotten near 20 MPG in normal driving and on the interstate it gets around 23 to 24. My wife likes it a lot better than a car because she can see out of it much better, it is easy to get in and out of and it will turn around in a wide spot of the road. It is fare easier to see out of and handle than a van and gets about the same fuel mileage. I will probably have to get her another if this one ever dies.

My cousin has an 03 v6 4x4 and he really likes it. It is kinda small inside but it works for him because he is a short little guy, prolly only 5'6''-5'8''

I had an 01 when they first came, it was the best bad weather driving suv I ever had. It got exactly what the window sticker said with the V-6, 18/24 I believe it was. When our lease is up on our fusion, were going back into a 4 cylinder 4x4 escape.

I agree with the bad weather performance. I did an experiment with mine on a snow covered hill. I had a 4X4 Dodge Power Ram, a 4X4 Subaru SW and the 4X4 Escape. Neither of the others would make it up the very slick hill but the Escape made it without any problem.
