Last year I purchased an 85 f-150 4WD with a rebuilt engine 351, w or c. I don't believe it is the original motor. The former owner knew even less about it than I do. The new starter I bought for the truck was slightly smaller in diameter than the old one and I need to know how to find out what motor I have so I can start solving my mechanical problems. The truck starts fine when cold, but won't turn over when hot. I have replaced starter, solonoid, alternator, battery, new cables, set timing. Still same prob.

I just put a new 351W in my F150. Had the same problem and couldn't find it. I replaced everything just like you did and still had the same problem. Hauled it in to my mechanic, and he found my new battery had a dead cell; new battery, problem solved. A friend of mine just put a 302 in his truck; same thing with starter problems; had to replace with at least 3 starters before he got a good one. Check to see what your starter is pulling when it cranks; pull the lids off the battery and put a load on the battery and see if one cell boils (if it does, it's toast). Then check your amps, section by section from the battery to solenoid, across solenoid; from solenoid to starter. Also check for a good ground to the block off your battery.
