I am replacing the head gasket on my 86 6.9. the piston in the front of the right bank looks like someone took a meat tenderizer to it. As far as I can tell from a visual examination it doesn't have any cracks in it but it just looks ugly.
Any idea what might have caused this? Should I R & R this piston? Or is there some way of repairing it if it needs it(preferably without removing it)? I have some pics but don't know how to upload them into the forum yet but I could email them to someone.
Sounds like a glow plug tip broke off at some time and wound up beating around the cylinder for a bit before getting blown out.
Far as the piston goes, depends on how picky you are, how long you plan on keeping the truck. Smooth out the high spots and put it back together. Run it till it needs a complete rebuild.

No high spots jut a bunch of pits. As long as the piston isn't cracked I will just leave it alone. Anyone know if you can reuse the intake gasket?
