Well, I did it. After getting tired of the play in my steering wheel, I bought a new (not remanufactured) gear box. I have already replaced all ball joints and installed a 3" drop pitman arm and it only helped a little. It was hard to find a new gear box. Everybody had reman's available but couldn't get new. I finally convinced myself to go to the stealership. Now she drives like she were brand new again!!!
i gonna try to tighten my box before i go that route ....(the expensive route....)
I tried that. An 1/8th of a turn is about max you should go. Any more than that the gear box gets really hot and the steering is very tight. When I tightned mine it made it so the steering wheel wouldn't straighten itself out after a turn. I didn't like that.
I was trying to find one and couldn't. are the reman's any good? how much do you pay for the new one?
Don't buy a reman!! The one I bought was almost as bad as the original one. Even the stealership has a hard time finding new. I paid $300 for the new one, the reman I bought first was $245.

Been there, done that on a few VW beetles a long time ago.
Learning the hard way, I swore to myself about 15 years ago that it will be a new box or none at all.
If the customer insists to save money I tell them to go get one and I will bolt it in. They still will pay me for the labor whether it works good or not. NO warrenties.
