I have the 5.4 and the only reason for that is because i got it for a steal...but if that werent the case i would have gone with a v10. only thing bad is you have to buy 2 more plugs at plug change time. you get a lot more power with close to same mpg's.
sorry i'm new here, guess i should have done a search
Don't worry about it...
Anyway, the 5.4L V8 is decent. It will tow decent. It's very reliable. If you do not tow alot, or go in deep mud or sand very much (though it will still do it) it's a decent option...
However, The 6.8L V10 is...better. It will tow with the best of 'em (especially with the 4:30 LS rear), It's very reliable too. It does a better job in the mud/ sand. Another thing I like about the V10 is that it truly is smooth and quiet.
Could I live happily with the V8?....well....after all, I did go with the V10
I have a couple friends with the V8 and are very happy with them too so....
It really depends on the application. Mileage between the two is minimal especially since you need to be on the V8 more to do what the V10 does.
"Another thing I like about the V10 is that it truly is smooth and quiet."
You know I never could get this, and maybe it was just my truck, but at 65 plus MPH I really didn't think the V10 was quiet, in fact I'd say it's easily as loud as the 6.0 I have now. Like I said, maybe it was just my truck, but I wont ever tell someone the V10 is quiet. Perhaps the new 3 valve is?
^^ I'm with you on that one. My 2v is pretty loud above 3000RPM. It is very smooth though. Far more so than the 4.2l in my dad's 98 F150. For a 90* V10, it's almost eerily smooth.
I can't comment on the mileage, but maintenance costs on the 10 will be slightly higher, as oil changes and plug changes will be a little more costly. I didn't look into it at all, but is there a difference in insurance costs between the two motors? That may be a factor to consider.

Huh...as loud as the 6.0 - I don't think so. Don't confuse wind/road noise for engine noise..
and yeah, as a truck engine it is smooth and quiet compared to most.
Welcome to FTE! Lots of good folks willing to share their knowledge to help you with your truck.
As for the V8 vs V10, I owned a V10 and loved it, but they are hard to sell when the time comes, especially with gas what it is today. If you plan on keeping it, you will enjoy
the power and performance. If you keep your foot out of it, it will get about what the V8 gets. If you drive like you want to, it will get 8 or 9 in town.

Did you actually read my post? I said at highways speeds, not at idle and thank you, I know the difference between wind noise and road noise.
I also see you have the 3V so ......
By the way, since you've got me excited, compared to most truck engines? I think Chevy would have something to say about that statement.
I use my 5.4L as a daily driver and tow 3-4 times a month, 8000+ pounds. It gets the job done very well. I average 15 MPG mixed driving, 16.5-17 highway and 10-12 around town. I love my V-8!
As for being underpowered, consider this. A 2003 2V V-10 was rated at 310 HP. A 2005+ 5.4L V-8 is rated at 300 HP. Remember that next time someone says the V-8 is underpowered.
As for the "Yes, but the V-10 has much more torque!" argument that will come up, this is made by people who don't understand what horsepower and torque values mean. Say you have two guys working for you, loading 25 pound sacks of feed into rail cars, Fred and Bob. Fred can lift 50 pounds, Bob can lift 25 pounds. Fred has twice as much "torque" as Bob, but wait, there is more. Fred can load 2 sacks a minute, but Bob can load 4 sacks a minute. Bob has twice as much "horsepower" as Fred.
I think if you have a crew cab you'll want the V10. I really wanted a stripped down truck when I started looking, with V8. I ended up with a Lariat and V10. I have a wife and kids and the stripped down regular/supercab truck I wanted wasn't practical so I started looking for a crew cab. Then I came to the realization that the V10 was $600 retail (and I wasn't paying sticker so the V10 costs even less). When I started reading about mileage, horsepower, torque, etc., it just made sense to buy the V10 with 4.30 gears and not have to wonder if I was underpowered. With the crew cab I think it's a better choice. These trucks are just so darned heavy. *If* I was buying a truck for hauling stuff in the bed and not pulling I'd probably still get a V10, but the V8 would do the job just as well.

Right - engine noise is not the same as road/wind noise that's why I mentioned it..
Now that you have got me excited - Chevy?? Bring it on
this topic has just been severly beaten to death multiple times.

We never seem to get tired of arguing about it, so no harm done. Just don't expect to form a clear answer based on our opinions.

There is probably more to your requirements than just a daily driver. If you are just going to go back and forth to work, you really don't need a superduty. But if you just want one, "because", hey that's as good a reason as any. If that's all you plan to do, you may be one of the few who should go with the 5.4L.
