hey guys i'm again in need of your infinate wisdom. I have a '02 ranger 4x4 w/ 4.0 (sohc) auto 4.10 gears, currently running the factory tires 245/75/16 at 70mph the tach reads around 2600 rpm . I think this is alittle high w/ an OD tranny, but I'm usually wrong. I'm taking this week to get the tranny fluid changed and they have a fuel sys cleaner thats supposed to be good. Has anybody done this fuel treatment, did it help? And the bigger question I had, was Ihave a chance to buy a set of 285/75/16 for a cheap price, will the bigger tires help lower the gear ratio (virtually, i know it wont really change it), threfore making my gas mileage better? thanks in advance for any help.
Hillbilly - the 285's will make your speedometer read about 5 mph low at an indicated 65 mph and about 2 mph low at an indicated 25 mph. Unless you can re-calibrate it.
Yeah it will change the gear ratio, but because the tires are bigger and heavier, it won't help the mpg. I ran 265/75-16's on my 04 4x4, they worked really well, looked good and didn't seem to effect the mpg that I could tell.
thanx for the replies, that was pretty quick. your probably right about the 285's, now i got a line on some 255/85/16 they are 33x10x16 if i'm not mistaken, so the friction shouldn't change much right? has anyone got any suggestions on the "Jiffy Lube" type fuel injection system cleanings?
