I towed my fifth wheel this week for the first time and I have a couple of questions.
The weight of the trailer is 12000# and when I start from a dead stop I feel a shudder or vibration in the truck it only lasts a few seconds until I have a little speed and then goes away. Also when going down the interstate it seems that I have to push the throttle down a good inch or more before I notice a gradual change in RPM but the boost guage shows an immediate response but the RPM does not move much until I get up to 35# of boost. I have had 7 Ford diesels so I am use to diesels but this seems strange but this engine is a unlike any of the other diesels. Does this sound normal, what are you guys seeing and do you think I have a problem. It seems like I have plenty of power it is just seems odd that the boost responds so much an the Rpm is sluggish.

For the shudder/vibration, that is a common problem on these trucks. It is an alignoment issue with the driveline. When you have a heavy load the alignment is different. You can take it to the dealer and they can shim it to alleviate the problem.
As above the shudder is a common problem..we have that and apparently Ford doesn't much care. As for the throttle response time we do not seem to notice that. Then again we are dragging around over 13K so perhaps a bit of a lag between boost and RPM under those conditions is normal...does is do that when not towing.???

I found during a hill the boost rises to increase power. The Transmission is so tight it is like a standard and will raise rpms only as speed increases. For example going up a hill at 60mph it might be at 1900 rpms at 25# boost. If I step on it more the boost might rise to 35# but the rpms will stay the same until 62mph will increase to 2000 rpms. Only if I really step on it for it to downshift will the rpms change.
Thanks for the information. firehawk198 I am seeing the same thing as you I guess that is the nature of the beast. I talked to my Ford dealer about the shudder and they are going to look at putting a shim in and see if that helps. Love the truck!
