351/w

i got an 83 ford 150 xlt lariet with a 351/w
it runs but overheats in town i wanted to just replace the engine but money been tight so i need
to keep this one for now if it overheats at lights quickly but can run for a long time on open road and highways fine what should i check for the problem?

had a similar problem-went for a new radiator and seemed to fix it

Thermostat. I'll bet thats your problem...My advise to you is to get another thermostat...195 degree is best, and check the hoses for any cracks or leaks, if they have some replace them, and you probably should flush your system and put new antifreeze in it. I had mine done last year and I think I spent a total of $30 bucks?

You more likely have a restriction in the radiator.It doesnt overheat on the highway because the waterpump is turning faster pushing more pressure past the restriction and you have air flowing across the radiator.Are the fins in front of radiator clean?? If not take a water hose and clean from BACK SIDE of radiator to the front.If you do drain/change coolant now is the time to check hoses and T-stat. Goodluck Windsor660

Don't forget to make sure your clutch fan is working properly.
