I have a 92 EB that I am replacing the power steering gear box. For the last five days I have been trying to remove the pitman arm from the steering gear. I have a pitman puller that I have clamped almost to its breaking point. I have used heat. I have bathed the part in wd40, liquid wrench and pd blaster and beat it unmercifully with a hammer. Any other tips or insights that anyone could provide to get this thing to break I would be most appreciateive.
once you removed the nut and placed the puller over the arm and tightened the center bolt it should pop lose, in the old days we would put a heavy hammer on one side and hit the opposite side with another heavy hammer, you might try that.JNT
I put a steering box on my '93 EB two weeks ago....Mine was stuck, too. I used a pitman arm puller, PB Blaster (the best in my opinion), and heat. I wasn't concerned for the old gearbox seal since the whole thing was toast anyway. Heat it up and let it cool. Or you can also try heating it up and quickly dousing it with water. After about three times of this mine finally popped loose. Lots of hammering and choice words don't hurt a bit either.
Welcome to the pittman arm pulling frustration club. PB Blaster, propane torch, pittman arm puller and loaner separator fork. The shaft was bigger than the fork opening so ground out the inside of the fork a little. Removed the gear box. Got mad the second day, heated it hotter and hit fork with all my might with a medium size mallet and it popped loose. I love my Red-Head Steering Gear box.
I work at a dealership. The best thing that works that I use all the time is a good impact gun with good compressors of course and a pitman arm puller and heat. Get a torch heat it until its red or close to it. then zip it right off and it should be like butter. just let it sit for at least an hour or more because if you put in in water it might become disfigured it a little. Be careful its going to be hot and do this with the steering box out of the truck is so much easier.
