I am pretty ignorant of diesel engines but I am looking to enter the fray. I am looking for a 92-96 body style truck, but I am strongly considering a diesel for longevity and fuel economy reasons. So I have some questions.
1. What kind of fuel economy would I be looking at for an f250? Automatic and manual.
2. any reason to avoid the automatic?
3. At what # of miles would you say "that's too many to consider for a daily driver"?
4. If a diesel needs overhauled, what kind of cash are you looking at?

That can vary from gearing and model of trans.
2. any reason to avoid the automatic?
They are ok but in the long run tend to need more repairs.
3. At what # of miles would you say "that's too many to consider for a daily driver"?
I have seen with few miles that were junk and have seen motors with allot of miles that were fine. Maintenance and a little luck are the factors there.

I depends on what you have done. That can range from under a grand to over 3 grand.
With that being said I probably didn't answer any questions. Sometimes just go with your gut feeling. It is usually right.
I just bought a '94 turbo diesel (not Powerstroke) with 368K on it and it runs great but as catfish said you could buy one with 150K that's falling apart.
I would say don't get a Powerstroke, more expensive, more expensive for parts, more complicated and I would say for NOTHING to be gained.
Plus if you work on your own rig these guys 'll help you out more than any group I have ever seen.
I just bought a 94 F350 turbo diesel (non-powerstroke) myself. Just got it yesterday morning (shipped in from TX). Only 150k miles. It's a crew cab SRW longbed manual trans. So far it seems to be a great truck. Don't have any hard numbers on MPG yet but I expect about the same as my 150. I did shop around until I found a manual due to the E4OD cost to repair/replace vs. me being able to work on a manual if need be. Check out Arlington Imports (here is a link to the truck I bought eBay Motors: Ford : F-250 (item 110247974122 end time Apr-30-08 14:01:52 PDT)
). They treated me great and I got a solid truck in good shape.

If it's a 4wd. sounds like my truck, I got a manual for the same reasons. Your's has less than half of the miles of mine though and mine's still runing strong. So if you keep on top of your coolant (get some test strips) and maintenence you can expect a lot of miles ahead.
Well I'm speaking from a Canadian point of view, our prices are a little different
Can't help with the tranny, I don't mind the automatic
These days Diesel is more expensive than regular gas, so I break it down like this if you plan on hauling or you want something bigger than a f150 go diesel(I have an 06 F250 with a 5.4L, take my word for it), otherwise I would get a nice gas truck Ranger or F150 with low millage and in good shape.
Diesel's cost more for parts and labor hours IMO, but you can't beat a good work horse, my last diesel was a 99 F350 7.3 with over 500,000KM on it. It's still running as a work truck all over, I heard buddy even took the ditch about a week after he bought it and it's still going hard, I see it once in a while.
I would try to stay away from the 6.0's though some are good, some not so much, but that's for newer models.
