I am pretty ignorant of diesel engines but I am looking to enter the fray. I am looking for a 92-96 body style truck, but I am strongly considering a diesel for longevity and fuel economy reasons. So I have some questions.
1. What kind of fuel economy would I be looking at for an f250? Automatic and manual.
2. any reason to avoid the automatic?
3. At what # of miles would you say "that's too many to consider for a daily driver"?
4. If a diesel needs overhauled, what kind of cash are you looking at?

Thanks for all the help!
1: Cant tell you about a manual, although they usually get a little better than auto, but my auto is capable of 16-19, depending on how lead-footed i am. That's bone stock. some guys with proper mods can do 20-22mpg.
2: our automatic (code:E40D) is not the strongest, but good. it has a small "bump shift" problem that causes slight slippage in the 3rd/OD shift, but its really not all that bad
3: I bought mine with 259K. currently at 267K. many guys on here are running 300K+ with little to no problems. the key is getting a well maintaned truck.
4. It's pretty big money, i would ballpark it at around $4-5K, but i cant say for sure. that would be having a shop do it.
If you are towing then the economy is going to be a lot better than with any gas truck. My truck gets better mpgs than any truck that Ive owned empty and way better towing. Like secondarychaos said the autos arnt the best but they arent really that bad either. My turck has 182000+ and others have close to 300000+ with no problems.A rebuild is pretty steep. but afterwards you will have a great truck and not have to worry about the motor for another 300,000+ miles.
How much are you looking to spend, if you do buy a truck?
you can pick up a good OBS PSD for less than $10k, up to $15k depending on what you're looking for. i got mine for $8k and the most i've had to do was an oil change and disconnect a faulty keyless entry unit (thanks TJ) and i must say on that note, there are quite a few experts here...
