6.0 worth it ?

Ok well i am new here ! and i have searched the forums for the answer to my question... i am getting a new truck in the next week and i have spotted an 06 harleydavidson f250 4x4 it has 110000 miles on it ! i kind of knew the guy that had it before it is all highway miles and he babied it he never pulled anything it has a lift on it with 37 inch tires , anyways i have heard that the 6.0s had alot of problems ,and to stay away from them ? i didnt want to invest all my money in this truck and it break down on me !!! i am hoping that this will last threw all 4 yrs of my college ! also how long do they last miles? I am suppost to be getting it out the door for $22,000 is that a good deal?

'i know this is alot of questions but i need help please this money i am getting from a relative for graduation and has to be put to a truck and i cant waste it on a break down

Welcome to FTE!

What do you plan to use the truck for, specifically? Have you run an OASIS report yet?

I love my PSD, but, if I was looking for college transportation and money was tight, I would not consider this the vehicle to get. It was designed for heavy hauling and just the maintenance costs could be a factor for you and maintenance is essential for these vehicles.

22k is slightly on the high side for a truck with 110k on the odometer even for a private deal. The 6.0s do have their little quirks, but I don't have any complaints about mine. I would get the vin number and put in a request for an OASIS report in the thread at the top of this forum. As far as to how long the engines last in mileage, little over 100k the truck is barely broke in, people get tired of the truck long before the truck gets tired and then you can always rebuild the engine and it'll last a couple more 100k miles. I would do the OASIS report first, if that comes clean then I would try to haggle a little better price(it isn't too far off, but a couple more k would help, I sold one that had 100k a few yrs ago for 18k and that was before diesel had the bad fuel price so you should be able to get closer to that then 22k).

Save $$

Agree w above. 15 qts of oil and filter will cost as much as lab fees. PSD is a work horse but is also pretty and well mannered. But like a lady, is somewhat higher costing. Wait till you're out of school or if nothing else wait to see what Diesel costs after Summer is in swing

Moose, As a dad...I agree with the guys above that say 'think about your choice before you invest in something thats gonna cost you more than you realize'.

For example...you hear us talk about oil changes. In my F150, it's 5 quarts of oil and a filter that costs a couple of bucks. With the diesel, it's now 13 quarts of oil and a filter that costs (depending on what's available to you store wise) 10 to 13 bucks apiece.

Ok, the diesel lover in me is saying, 'do the OASIS report and determine what kind of truck you've found'. FYI, the OASIS report will tell you any maintenance that Ford's done to the unit. All you need to run the OASIS is the VIN. Once you get the report back take a good look at it. If it has appearance items you're good....but if you see turbos and heads, and oil leaks and injectors that have been serviced over and over....go find another truck.

That being said, I have one of the real early 2003 6.0's. Mine was like number 800 off the line. Some of the early 6.0's were dogs and some were fine running machines. I got lucky and mine is one of the good ones. In the year that I've owned it, I've put over 30K miles on it and other than a bad odometer cluster (under warranty), body work from that deer that insisted on committing suicide under my truck and rotors (non-warranty) and oil changes mine's been great. Don't be afraid of a 6.0....just do your homework.

Good luck!

Joe

I rebuilt mine on weekends and Christmas break from grad school In hindsight with the way I drive it I should have gone with a V10, but this was a great deal on the salvage and I really love the diesel power. Also, my dad has the same year/engine/trans and neither one has had major problems.

With a lot of city driving and quads being your big load an F150 would do you much better. Just an honest opinion.

I agree, an F150 with a 5.4L would give you all you need. If you want bigger and more muscle get a SuperDuty with a V10. Doing a lot of city driving is going to be hard on the 6.0L since thats not what diesels are intended for.

Agreed. There's some excellent advice in this thread. Of course, that's what you get in the 6.0 Forum!

The Diesel engine is tempting but you would probably be happier overall with an F-150. You could tow 6K or 7K with relative ease and be much happier with the ride quality. The 6.0 is a high-performance engine and must be treated like one to ensure longevity.

Listen to these guys. Diesels are expensive to maintain. My company provides me with a 2008 XLT F-150 w/ the 5.4 and it'll run like a scalded mule. Be smart until you get out of college then buy whatever the heck you want. My 2 cents.

yep, I agree with every statement above except one. 22k is a good deal for an 06 HD 4x4 w/ 37s. IMO

Not for the miles it's not, not even on a private deal. Aftermarket parts don't really factor in on a trade-in. All the crap I put into my truck won't amount to a hill of beans when I go to sell it(which I more then likely won't). Now there are people that might spend a little extra for the aftermarket parts, those are few and far between and you have to be lucky enough to have one interested in your truck and holds those additions at a higher value. However, given what's going on with fuel and now bent towards different goals and on a future college kids budget, not a good idea to be leaning towards that.
