If you truck was a 2wd, its got proboably 2:55 gears. My 78 F150 had that. Instead of going with a locker, and if u wanna have something alot lighter but stronger in the back, get a spool, or a mini spool. And 4:11's are awsome if you wanna hit that 60mil/hr on the 1/4 mile fast and smoke your tires super easy.
Another thing i noticed when i had my rear end appart when i stripped of the axle splines on a spider gear (good story behind that one hahaha) is the spider gear inside the pumpkin which dosnt have the clutches for the limited slip, it has about a 1/4inch lip which recesses into the shell of the pumpkin where the axle slides into. The spider thats on the side with the clutches has no lip because the clutches are about 1/4 inch thick total, same as the lip on the other spider, and the gear sits right up against the clutches. I was wondering, I'll try when I finish the motor, can you take out the clutches and the spider on that side of the pumpkin and put the same spider from the other side (non-clutch side) in place of where the clutch/spider gear was? Will it work? Would it act like a spool?
That's going to be one for others to answer, I know very little about rear ends. I know, I was kinda shocked when the guy told me I had a 2.75 back there. but I guess in the long run its better. But on my new truck i'm working on the with the 460, I'm going with some faster gears and a posi like a auburn Posi lock.
I've come to find out that unless your truck lives 90% on its life on a strip or in the dirt a true locker is a nightmare to use on a truck that is mostly city driving..
Well not entirely that bad... its just hard on the tires Ive found. I have a Detroit locker in my every day driver with 4:10's but im running 35' mud tires. In the winter, when the streets get icy, it gets a little interesting when you have a locker, it loves to slide out alot! haha
