Hey I am kind of new at the motor building leg of trucks. Question is on the crank should the journals be feelabe with the finger or are there suppose to be none between the connecting rods ??
Im talking about the part on the crank where the connecting rods bolt to. Is there suppose to be a line in the crank right there or is it suppose to be smooth?
Well i have two cranks one is smooth and the other has got the lines....was just wonding which way it was suppose to be.... I am building a 302. For my 82 pickup truck.....
Even though the one crank is smooth, you should take it to
a machine shop and have it checked. Cranks wear out of round.
There is more wear on the crank in the position where the piston
pushes down when firing than when it swings around the bottom
when the piston is at the bottom of it's stroke. If you watch
the machinist he will mike the crank in several positions. The
big end of the rods will also wear out-of-round too. The only
way I would just stick a crank in would be if I knew the motor
before the teardown and it didn't have very many miles. Work
with a good local machine shop and they will guide you through
or you will be posting a subject later on this forum"Why is my
oil pressure low?"
I did know the motor before got it from my brother in law he went through a major overhal. All new rings bearings cam crank all the good stuff except for pistons....drove it for about 1,000 miles it developed a low end lite knock tore it down found a piston with the ear broke off. I have that taken care of. All is good.. now
