Don't Pull My Cab! / Help!

I am 2 months into my 08 350 and 3000 miles. I have had 4 other Ford diesels, 92, 97, 99 and 01. I got a check engine light and took it to the dealer. The tech comes out after about 30 minutes with my truck. He tells me it is not good news. The #5 glow plug is bad according to the computer and he will have to take my cab off to repair it. It will take at least 2 days if things go right, he said they never do. He said he hates to do it because they never go back together like they come from the factory. He gave me some things to try myself because the engine was hot, but they did not work ( disconnect battery, and cpu harness). Has anyone had this problem and does anyone have a suggestion?

The cabs on the 08 pickups are designed to come off easily. I have heard reports from actual techs on here that they go back perfect...sometimes better than from the factory. Ask your mechanic if he has done an 08 before or if he is referring to 07 and older.

My truck was totaled in the front end. After the rebuild my body seams are more even than my dad's '03 that's never had any work done to it. They can get it back together right if they know what they're doing.

you dont have to pull a cab for the glow plugs, much less for the valve covers.

This tech smells a little fishy, additional item to remove the number 5 glow plug is the air cleaner. So we have a problem.

I looked at the plug myself and thought I could do it. I sure do not want the cab off on a two month old truck. I also do not like riding around with an idiot light on. Good news was a new flash is coming in June to help mileage and change regin process. Also the tech said he has done 6 cab offs this year.

My dad is a certefied diesel tech, and he says that the cab off is really no big deal on the 08's because Ford designed it that way. He has done 2 already with 3 more coming in. All for the high pressure fuel pump.

The glowplugs are kind of a pain to work on but you do not have to pull the cab. I have seen the #7 glowplug replaced in the vehicle and that is much worse than #5. Maybe time to consider a different dealer if they want to pull the cab to replace let alone they won't get paid even close to that for the warranty repair.

Sounds to me judging from the tech's negativity, that the he does not want the job. Why not oblige him and find another dealer with better customer skills.

Tech sounds worn out. They can get burned out quick if they are working on diesels. Most are under warranty, crazy warranty times and everything is heavy.I do agree not to have that tech working on it.Make sure the person is certified in diesel engine repair and diesel engine performance. Some, not all Ford dealers use any tech to do the the repair. They will do the repair and flag the certified tec's number.Need certs in specialty 51 and 52.It is difficult to get the diesel certs.Average is 1 to 2 years. Most dont want the certs because of the crappy warranty times issued by Ford.
