Hey guys, my radiator top is leaking again!!! This is the 3rd time I've taken it off and had it fixed!! I had a new core put in this thing 12 years ago. It's only got 15,000 miles on it, but it is getting old on the recore. My radiator guy said that the core was in not so good shape, and I should think about replacing it with a "crossflow" radiator. SO my question to you guys is do any of you guys have any pictures of a good looking way to mount a cross flow radiator?
I dont want it to look like an "after thought" You've seen my truck, I try to think and plan out my mods so PLEASE HELP!!I can buy a repro radiator for this thing, but I need to make up my mind soon. I'm planning to drive it to Pigeon Forge in June.
I don't know how much motor you have, but you may not need the extra cost/benfits of a cross flow. I rane a very easy SBC ( I thnk you have the same?) 283 with my 6 cyl radiator in a '58 1 ton -other brand, I put a dump bed on it, and we routinely hauled 3-4 cords of wood...here in the 100+ degrees temps.
I had the radiator recore for like 60 0r 70 bucks (back in the mid 90's) price is probably up ny now, but if your Samll block is up to task and mild, I don't see why you'd need to spend big bucks on something now?
If you're running a SBC get yourself a radiator for a 75 Dodge D-100 truck. The outlets are already in the right place and it fits within the confines of the 48-56 radiator support with little fabrication. It is also a three-row and only costs about $150. I am very happy with mine...
Truxx, Hey man, where have you been, haven't heard you on here much lately, better get the rad fixed before Pigeon Forge because it's gonna be fun, I'm gonna go to P.F. next week, leave Momma there and I'm going back to k'town for supernats sometime on Sat, gonna see if I can meet some of these guys there, see you in June at P.F., Garry
Hey homade, I've been real busy finishing up my buddy's truck. I finally got it done. I drove my truck to church Sunday and it blew the top tank AGAIN! I'm goin with a crossflow radiator. I'll have to change some things, but it will work. I just dont want to spend 3 or 4 hundred dollars and then have to change the bottom outlets to accomodate the FORD engine later. This way, I'll be able to do it for just hoses and labor. I have a new radiator I bought for another project I never got around to and sold. The radiator is all I have left.
I'll see ya in TN! My buddy is comming too and you'll get to see his truck!
Hey man, is the lower outlet in the right place? I looked at your gallery and it looks good! That just might work for me.
Outlets are located top left and bottom right. They are also the correct size so no hose size adapters needed. It keeps my truck at 180 even without a shroud. The only mod I made was to saw off the leading edge of a U-shaped bracket on the sides (although either the leading or the trailing edge can be removed depending on your space requirements), drilled a couple of holes, and knocked off the original cage nuts on the radiator support. It is also easily adjusted forward or rearward with spacers if you need more or less space between the engine and fan. I'm running a mechanical clutch fan and the long water pump and still have an inch between the fan and radiator...
Terry,
The Dodge radiator isn't a crossflow. Here's a link to the US Radiator catalog page of Dodge truck radiators showing all the dimensions, inlets, outlets, etc Classic Trucks - Dodge
US Radiator has a great catalog. What I did years ago was to search their catalog until I found something that I thought would fit. Then I found the same make, model out in the real world (I got lucky, my dad has a 75 dodge truck) so I could physically see and measure the radiator and brackets. then I went to the local parts house and had them order one in for the make and model I decided on. The radiator I'm using fits a 75 Dodge D200 with a 440 automatic but there are several other choices.
I bought mine from the local Checker, Autozone, Pepboys parts house (I Ican't remember which one) for about $150 a few years ago
I have also heard that mid 70's Ford truck radiators are a decent swap into the 53-56 trucks
Hey thanks everyone!, but I have a crossflow from another project and I guess I'll use it. It is new. The thing I really wanted was some pics of some folks with Crossflow radiators installed to see kind of how I'm goin to do it.
I took some measurements and made a cardboard box the size of the radiator for a mock up tool. That way it will be less of a chance of droping it on the fenders and doing damage to the truck. I think a late '80's Chevy truck radiator hoses will work for this application as well. I might have to change my water neck to get around my alternator, but I think I can make it work.
Thanks again
Check out the last 2pics of my truck. If you want better pics, email me at hell_fish_65 "AT" hotmail and i will take some and email you better bigger ones.
