Sluggish When Cold

My '01 PSD has a bad time of it when starting cold, anything below 25 F overnight. The engine starts just fine but there is no acceleration at all . It will creep out a 10 MPH for a few hundred yards and then finally "kick-in". It will not go into overdrive for about two miles, but at least it moves. Any idea what this could be? Has done this since I bought it at 200K miles 1.5 years ago. Right now it is still stock and has 277K on the clock.

Thanks
Dave

It takes a few minutes, never timed it and 5 minutes may be close, and it is only moderately sluggish. If I idle it around a lot for only a couple of minutes, it works OK, still a little sluggish but not alarming.

Welcome to FTE Dave. As Ray asked how does it act if you let it warm up a little first?

Do you notice any unusual smoke out the tail pipe when this is happening or hear any sounds that go away after the truck is warmed up?

No unusual sounds, only pressing the accelerator doesn't do anything more than a fast idle. Once it "kicks-in", it moves just fine and only takes about two miles to get to OD.

What oil are you running in it? Do you get engine response if you try to rev it up in park or neutral instead of drive?

To check the ICP you're going to need access to a scan tool that can monitor pressure and voltage with the engine running. Are you having any problems with start ups? You might unplug the ICP connector and see if you have a bunch of oil there. It's a round looking sensor on the inside front of the drivers head.

Ray. Did you have any other symptoms or signs he could look for?

What is the ICP sensor and what is it like to change it out?

the ICP is on the front of the left cyl head at top
to check it,unplug it before you start the truck when cold and see if it will act better, this put it in default mode and won't run right but will give an idea

basicly would just idle after it started when cold even with throttle on the floor and sometimes would romp when warm

I will ad this was another problem dealer couldn't find,I found it accidently

When was the last time you changed the oil? If it has been over 5,000 miles ago you are overdue on most oils in a stock truck. The injectors fire off of oil and the oil is thicker when cold or dirty and if both it will not want to take off or rev up until that oil warms up and thins down some.

I change the oil every 5,000 miles (OK, sometimes I go a little over, but not much). I use Shell Rotella 15-40 and had been using a Fram filter and just put a K&N in Sunday. I will check out the sensor.

Thanks

Get that K&N out of there and next time you change the oil get that Fram outa there too. They both suck big time.

What He Said!!!!!
K&N does not filter as well as you may think. There have been many turbo's dusted by them. They are also suspect in the demise of a motor that belongs to one of our 7.3 family. Use a Wix filter in place of the fram. Pay for quality and not a name.

I think he means a K&N oil filter which is a good one.
Is perhaps the exhaust back pressure valve sticking closed?
