Urgent HELP needed!!!!!

Alright guys, I'm abotu fed up with my drive shaft. I have been dicking with it all night over a broken head off a screw that happened a couple months ago that I had been meaning to get to.

Anyways, i was in a hurry, as its getting late, and in my never ending pursuit of stupidity I was unaware that I was apparently cross threading the slip joint. In my many times of installing drive shafts, including this one, I have never had this problem. But somehow, someway....I'm assuming thats whats happened as i cannot move it either way.

Any advice on where to go from here. I really need my truck for tomorrow so I'm hoping it is salvageable in some way, shape or form.

Thanks in advance
Nic

What do you mean cross threaded the slip joint? Was it worn down enough that you could do that? Or did you beat it in with a hammer? With some blunt force I'm sure you could pop it off and try again. Just be careful and don't break anything in the process.

BTW, what kind of grease did you use for the slip joint?

Well Im not certain, but I have never experienced this before. Its as if i didnt line the grooves on each end up

I just used some Mobil 1 synthetic drive line grease I had sitting around because this was not a planned project. I know there is better..

Thanks for the quick response pocket. What do you suggest for blunt force, ie. where to hit it at

What if you could lock one end of the driveshaft in something and then pull like hell on the other. May need a rubber mallet or something to help jar it, if you could hit it at the slip joint. When you get it apart you would definately want to look in the grooves and file them down some, with some scotch brite or something.

I know it doesnt solve your problem, but if you have to use your pickup you could always drop the drive shaft and run in 4hi if you have to. I broke mine in college and had to run it that way for a few days until parts came in.

Damn Nic......I'm not much help here, but I sure feel for ya! The idea of using the 4wheel drive to pull you around for a few days if you DID damage something sounds like a decent backup plan! Good luck....let us know what happens!

Im assuming your meaning the driveshaft with the carrier bearing?

Bolt up carrier bearing to tranny section. Put strap on yoke for rear section and ratchet it using the rear diff as an anchor point. Alighn the weights and she should slide right back together. Ummm thats if your talking about the rear diff which I gather you are since you could drive in 4 front.

Nic

There was a post in this forum titled Slip joint R&R Question . Search it and it has some more info I think is related to your problem. Seems there is a key spline in the slip joint that makes it so the two halves can only go together one way. If you misalligned the two pieces compared to when you took it apart it may explain your apparent lock up.

You might want to consider try applying some heat to the receiver side of the slip joint and cold water to the shaft side and hope that it loosens up just enough to be able to separate the two halves so you can realign it correctly.

Good luck

hey guys, thanks for your input. just got back in and showered up and actually got her done.

i ended up getting the stuck pieces off by a strap and another vehicle (very very lightly). It was too late to pound on it (neighbors) and I didnt have close to enough grunt to budge it. That is why i took that route.

I was actually getting so frusterated that i cleaned everything up, tools, parts and all. All that was left was the two pieces that slide together. I was like, oh what the heck, one last try. Sure enough, after all of the tools are put away and I'm about to give up, she slides right on like butter, done no differently than before. OH well shes done. No more clunk at take off and no more shimmy/axle wrapping feeling at take off either.

Thanks for all of your help guys, I repped all who helped me, except Pocket, I have to spread it around first. I really appreciate what you guys do for someone during a time of need.
