i have a 99 f250 diesel with manual locking hubs. lately when i turn right and then back to straight, the truck feels like it "jumps" back into the forward direction. i just had my calipers all redone, but it was doing this before i got the truck back. i live in the mountains and i used the 4x4 all winter long, and after reading some posts have a feeling there may be something wrong where my 4X4 won't disengage on the driver side. i took the hub off and put some wd40 in it so now it is easier to turn the locking mechanism but i am still getting the pulling on the one side. any thoughts on what may be wrong would be greatly appreciated. i am very new to this and have some knowledge but after spending a grand to get all 4 calipers redone i would like to have some idea if i can fix the problem before i drop and more money at a service station.
Try turning your front driveshaft. While turning it look at each wheel - if both stub axles are turning you are NOT locked in 4X4. If one side turns & the other doesn't - the one not turning is the one that is locked. Sticky hubs are a fairly common item - upgrade to Aftermarket Warns and this will disappear.
i 2nd dagren99 check those hubs thats what mine was! i hadn't got aroud to warn hubs yet but they are on the list. Welcome to FTE stick around and you'll wanna change more than just whats worrying you!

Welcome to FTE.
I did this a few weeks ago. Try doing this and it might help. click me
thanks for the help, i may just go and buy the warns instead of messing with the hubs, i found that if i leave the driver side hub locked the truck drives a ton smoother. it was shaking pretty rough on the highway yesterday around 75 miles per hour with both hubs unlocked then i stopped and locked the driver side and it seemed to clear up, what kind of damage am i doing?
You might check your wheel bearings and ball joints. Jack the front off the ground and get a big pry bar under the tires and try to move them up and down. I don't think it's your 4x4 hubs that is the problem. Not sure.
should there be a little movement or none at all, i used the truck all winter long hauling big loads, i just had all 4 calipers redone since i burned them out, living in the mountains and coming down the hill with a bit of weight in the back was hell on the truck, wonder if i wrecked the ball joints also? will let you know what i find.
i didn't get any movement, but then again, there is a chance i did not use enough muscle, the plate behind the driver side break is warped, could this be interfering with the turning?
back to the drawing board, is there another way to check the ball joints? i forgot to mention that when the driver side hub is unlocked i get this weird grinding noise and can feel it under the floor of the truck, then when i lock the hub it goes away. any thoughts on that?
Grinding noise w/o 4x4 engaged usually (99%+) = trashed hub bearings = install a new hub = fork over (maybe bend over would be more like it) and pay $400 or so. If you get the replacement @ NAPA or AZ watch the thread pitch on the wheel mtg studs - Ford (again) in their wisdom choose to put 2 separate thread pitches out there. I always take 1 lug nut w/ me and pick them up myself to ensure I get the correct thread pitch.
Ball joint play - you'd be able to feel it if they were gone - I didn't even have to pry I could move the tire in & out and had noticable wear on the inside edge of the tire. I you have to work hard to get them to move at all I'd say they are probably fine.
Trashed hub - tire should move side to side a little bit and when you turn the tire on that side you'll likely "feel" it too.
Ford in their infinite wisdom (Ha Ha...) made the hubs a sealed unitized unit that cannot be serviced.
thanks for the replies, i took the passenger side hub off and the white plastic at the top is cracked in half, also, the rod that it slips onto is real easy to move back and forth and i had some difficulty slipping the hub back on. is this supposed to happen? also who do i get the hub from? warn?
can you recommend a good service book, chilton? or is there something better?
