I have an 86 F250 4x4 with a 460 engine and T18 trans. I am about to swap the 460 for an I6 300. The I6 is out of an 85 F150 with a three speed with overdrive. I pulled the 6 out of the donor with the clutch still attached. I plan to pull the 460 out the same way, clutch and all. Will the T18 trans mate up with the I6 bell and clutch or will I have to change clutches? Also, will the engine perches from the 150 work in the 250 or will I have to get 4x4 perches?I would appreciate any input. Thanx, Bob
Yeah, I know the 460 has a different bellhousing. That's why I pulled the I6 out of the donor truck, bellhousing, clutch and all. I just wanted to know if the T18 shaft will spline up with the I6 clutch or will I have to change clutches.
Thanx, Bob
The T18 will probably bolt to the I6 bell, not sure about clutch spline, input shaft length etc, but it's a good bet it will work. Some Ford stuff interchanges, and I think this is one of them.
Make sure you get the engine mount perches out of the six cylinder truck. It's not because of the 4x4 or 2x4, it's because the six is so long and has a different motor mount configuration. Don't know about the clutch/tranny match up.
Thanks guys for the input. I was pretty sure everything would bolt together but I was not sure about the spline shaft and the perches. I feel better about the swap now. Also, the four speed that was originally bolted up to the I 6 in the F150 was a top loader.
Thanx, Bob
Gradrgy, why are you doing the swap? I was thinking about doing the same sawp if my 460 dies. I was thinking of going thru the I6 and putting a 4V and DS2 on it since the '86 is emission exempt these days. I'm not sure that there would be a significant mileage increase but the poor mans diesel is an awesome powerplant...
I'm doing the swap to, hopefully, make a significant change in my fuel mileage. The 460 gets 5 to 6 mpg, whereas, the I6 should get around 15 or so. To me, that's pretty significant.
The 460 has a lot of horses that I don't need any more, but I still have to feed them. I think the I6 fits my lifestyle better these days.
Thanx all, Bob
Don't count on 15 or so out of a 4x4 and 4spd. my buddy has three one fuelie two carb'd the fuelie is 4x4/auto w/od it does 10-13 the one is carb/2wd/4spd it does 12-14 and the other carb is 4spd/4x4 it does 10 downhill with a tailwind.
