Just purchased 85 F-150 which may have the HO engine. VIN engine code is H which is 4bbl. The block I.D. is E4AE-6015-FA-6 with 6J29 stamped underneath. The carb on here is a 2bbl. The air cleaner is printed with 5.8L 4V H.O. How can I check the engine to verify if it is an HO and what are the differences between it and a stock 351w?
I have been told that the only difference between the HO and standard 351 is a mild RV cam and four barrel intake and carb. I have the intake for the HO engine, if needed. I do have the carb, but these gave some problems anyway. Best bet is to buy new carb. Cams are easy to get, but I also have the HO cam if needed (94K miles). The HO engine of that year is only rated at 210 horse.
Thanks for your reply. I've been having so many problems with the carb on it I went ahead and pulled the intake manifold today. I would be interested in purchasing the intake and carb you have. I have to be able to pass emissions here in Houston. This has the EGR on it. I believe the carb for it is the 4180C. If you could give me a price I would appreciate it. My email address is ratcliff@hal-pc.org or leave a message here.

I had the same engine. When I got it it ran on seven and burned and leaked a quart of oil every 45 miles. It passed emissions like that. I built it and the c6 right after. It failed every year after. I had to have it hooked up to a machine, adjust the timing and do some creative air routing that the emissions guys wouldn't see. It ran like a rubber boot. Avoid the headache, don't put the 4V carb on or if you do, don't use a holley. I forgot to mention that I bought a new OEM holley for it and it still failed. I had a '79 460 with a similiar carb and it only passed 2 out of the 22 times it went through emissions.
i also have a 351w 4v ho and its wonderfull,holley 4 1987 bronco and it runs like a trooper.
i disagree with the other guy go ahead and buy it.
good luck
If your in houston and its an 85 that is 25 yrs old don't need to pass emmissions in houston due to age of vehicle got an 85 351 w bronco and all I needed to do is pass a basic old school inspection headlights horn blinkers you know just the basic items that's it
It's been five years since the last post on this thread and I've just been given, by youngest son, a 1986 f150 lb 4x4 with the 351 ho engine, this truck is replacing my 1983 f150 in-line 6 and, I am wondering if there are any new insights into improving the gas mileage for this truck, as is.
The truck only has 114,400 miles, and has all original equipment, the original owner kept it sheltered and well maintained.
As much as I like the i6, I really want to give the 5.8l a fair chance to impress me.
Drive slower, slow down early for turns and stops, and never use more than half throttle. Keep it tuned up, and put narrow highway tread tires on it at max pressure.

Keep the truck empty, stay under 60-65mph. Drive like you have an egg under your foot...
Those are the free / near free things. The Comp XE250H cam is really good. The E5-E6 heads are good, but if you have to rebuild them get some E7's or better GT40's. A good Y pipe will do wonders, but will likely be to be fabbed up.
