When I stsrt my truck (1993 F-150 5.8L EFI) up the oil pressure gauge does a little jump and then settles back down to almost nothing even when I am exceleratiing on the highway. Is this normal? I always thought that this was not a good thing. Is the oil pump maybe needing replacing? Any help would be appreciated.
If this just started we can only hope that it is just the oil pressure sender unit. If the oil pressure is really that low you should hear the valve lifters clattering....
I just changed the oil and filter 2 weeks ago so that eliminates ther clogged filter. No valve lifter chatter. I'll have to check out the posts about checking the oil pressure. Haynes book says 30 - 45 psi is what it supposed to be. I checked with Advance Auto and the guy in there said it could be because of worn out piston rings (170K on engine), I thought the pump was what produced the oil pressure.

Worn rings will cause oil consumption in the form of a blue cloud following you. Worn pump, excessive bearing clearance will cause low pressure.
I've checked to make sure the oil pressure sending unit is securely connectd. Yes it is a Fram filter. On a cold start the needle will go up to the N in the word Normal and then slowly go down. So at a minimum I am going to have to pull the pan off and check the pick up and screen as a maximum get a rebuild kit w/pump.
Thanks Quicklook2. What would you recommend? Also while we're at it, would it be wise to put in a quart of lucas oil stabilizer? If I change the filter I'm sure I'm going to lose some oil.
I have had FRAM oil filter issues in the past so I never recommend them to anyone in fact I tell everyone that FRAM is JUNK!!!!. I have used Lucas in the past with good results. Reading all the things you have tried I think you might want to change the sender first. If that does not fix it then yes pull the oil pan if you can and check the pick-up and the oil pump. If you find some plastic pieces they are most likely from the cam timing gear.
Guys I thank you for all your help and suggestions. I went to my local Ford dealership and talked to a tech who knows my brother because he is a volume buyer because of his plumbing business and they checked the oil psi and said it was within the ranges for the mileage but said a new pump would be needed in the future. Also told me where to order a replacement gauge (Electric, so I don't have to run any tubes) that will show me the oil pressure in psi instead of an idiot warning gauge. Also said if I switch to a Fram HP1 (High Performance) which has a relief valve mechanism inside it would open if the filter element failed or a $30 K&N oil filter would do nice too. She was very nice but asked me to change my avastar for one week for her. I said OK.
Doesn't matter I can't use it anyway because I get an error message stating that it is a animation, huh? what is my avatar now? . Will send it if you email me treading@cfl.rr.com, just a chick with a ford t-shirt jumping up and down with fluxuations in the t-shirt (headlights on). She is my brother's fleet sales person and he buys 15-30 trucks (F-350-450 deisel G-chassis) a year for his company.
