i was thinking of getting a do it yourself herculiner kit for my 04 f150. are these any good. are they easy to put on. if they arent good what is another good do it yourself brand to use cause i dont got the money to go spend 400 on a sprayin liner they put in for you.
I just put one in my truck last week and turned out realy good. I'd get more then it says to get. I used a gallon and a quart and it was just enough for 2 coats. Then i got another and used half of it to touch up spots then I mised. I would also recomend gettin a couple scuff pads for a drill or you'll be spendin a week scuffing in all the corners of the bed.
Save the money for a $400.00 spray in liner that will last for the life of the truck. I've seen some botched herculiner ones and I wouldn't want to try removing it. I'd say it dropped at least $1000.00 off of the resale on a bad job. My lot took one as a trade-in, and I know he was a grand under NADA quotes because of the bed, and some minor body damage.
I like the herculiner kits better than the single pass Rhino liner.
Got a single pass Rhino liner in the 04 in my sig, and I Hate it.
Looks bad, doesn't hold up to any abuse, and it's just thin
I have Hurculiner in my 79 Bronco. It's holding up great, and I'd say it is better quality than a single layer Rhino liner ($400).
I do like and highly recommend line-x, but it's 4 times the price of hurculiner.
I only needed a gallon for my bronco (front floor boards back to tailgate). You aren't suposed to put a 'thick' coat for the first coat. Just a good even layer, then the second coat you can make thicker.
It's holding up fine, but if I had to do it again, I might put a 3rd coat, but it doesn't need it, but I WOULD use the UV protectant to keep that glossy black look....if not it'll fade to a dull black (just like the Rhino liner did).
I have done both and my experience is that for the time it took to do the herculiner myself, it was much more worth it to spend the 400 bucks on a line X. The herculiner was good, but not even close to as durable, thick or even as the spray on.
ok thanks i might just wait then save my money up. there is just so much i wana do to my truck i was thinking of going with the hurculiner cause it was cheaper. i do have a soft tonneau cover on it but i still want a bed liner for if i haul my 4 wheeler or snowmobile or odds and ends
i put the herculiner in my 07. Looks great. You need to sand the bed down better then the scuff pad will do. I used 100 grit paper. Then apply the first coat in a thin even coat. Then after 24 hours put the second coat on nice and thick. I have a 5.5 ft bed and didnt use the entirepep Boys for Herculiner. gallon on mine. Looks great in my opinion. Total cost - $3.00 for sand paper & $69.95 at
I installed a Herculer in the Ford-Trucks.com 2000 Ranger project a few years back. It doesn't last. Eventually it starts to scours easily if something heavy is moved in it and will started breaking down due to UV light (additive or not). It just doesn't bond that well to itself, no matter how well it bonds to the bed. It definitely is for light use only for a few years at best. I spent a lot of time properly prepping it --- and the results were great but not in the long run. If you don't mind recoating it every few years I suppose its a good option, but my time is worth something to me.
I'm looking at getting something for the Powerstroke and will seek other options this time around.
Go to Herculiner's website and take a look at the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). You will see that Herculiner is only 72% solids which means it's 28% solvents. The solvents evaporate away and leave only the solids as the bedliner. So, if you pay $100 for a one gallon Herc kit, you end up with only about 3/4 of a gallon of actual bedliner product. Typically, LINE-X (and Rhino) apply about 4 to 4.5 gallons of 100% solids material. (There are no solvents in LINE-X or Rhino). So, to get the same amount of material out of Herc, you would have to buy 6 to 7 gallons. So, 6 gallons of Herc would be $600. Even if you bought Herc at $70 per gallon, you would still need to spend $420. And, don't forget there's no warranty with Herc.
You're not getting a better deal by buying Herc. You're just buying less of an inferior product.
i did the herc it was a lot of work it looked great at first...like someone else said it dont last
and it scrapes of fairly easy... if you used 2 gallons it would probably hold up a little better

I put the herculiner in my Bronco. Two coats from the front floor pans back to the tail gate, and I did the wheel wells, and still had a little left.
For the $60 I spent, I like the looks of it, and it holds up much better than the Rhino Liner that came in the 04 in my sig (which I know for a fact isn't 4 gallons of Rhino Liner).
Don't know how much the Rhino liner would of cost, but I'd guess aleast $300+ for that cheapo job.
The LineX bedliner is about the best bedliner to use if you have the money.
One nice thing about the aftermarket liners is if you want the option, they can color match it. There are even some brands which can put in any design you want!
