Redoing your intake is not going to give you the magic bullet you are seeking.

According to K&N: "We certainly understand why it is theoretically possible for a consumer to experience a mileage increase after installing a K&N air filter or intake system, however, we do not go so far as to make a general claim that our air filters and intake systems will provide an increase in mileage."

K&N does however publish many HP gain claims, including "30 HP for Mustang SVT".

I swapped my airbox out for a K&N FIPK and actually dropped about 1.5 MPG. If you've really got your heart set on one, I'll help you save a buck or two and swap you a K&N for your stocker (I've also got a '99 4.6). I don't really care about the mileage, I just swapped it out before I went overseas and the stock assembly got canned while I was gone. I can't complain....my wife actually cleaned the garage!

The best gain with an aftermarket FIPK is the money saved not replacing the paper filters constantly. LAst time I used a paper filter is was around $20, that is only 10 changes to pay for most intakes. I wouldn't expect mileage or performance gains either although throttle response could be a little better.
